Between sea and hedged farmland, marshes and wooded areas, the village of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée is located just behind Fouras, in the department of Charente-Maritime. Watered by the river Charente which flows into the Atlantic a few metres from the village, Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée is divided into two distinct districts. On one side, the small hamlet of Saint-Pierre made up of farms and old houses, including "Le Château", which is very popular with visitors because of its golf course in the Pays Rochefortais. Housed in a hilly and green setting, it offers golfers a 9-hole course and spectacular views of both the Charente estuary and the Rochefortais marshes. Mythical landscapes which make the reputation of the commune, and which would almost make you want to play golf just to be able to contemplate them. On the other hand, the town centre of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée also offers to contemplate very beautiful old houses, small streets overhung with typical Charente houses which, in addition to being particularly beautiful, are lucky enough to be only 5 kilometres from the ocean beaches.
Ah, the ocean beaches... They are one, if not THE reason why one comes and returns to stay in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée. The Plage Nord de Fouras is worth a look for its views of the Île d'Aix and the Île de Ré, while the Grande Plage or the Plage de l'Espérance, which offer breathtaking views of Fort Boyard and the Île d'Oléron, will be perfect for water sports aficionados. On the programme? Swimming, of course, but also sunbathing, lazing around, beach volleyball, beach clubs for the youngest, bike hire for seaside rides, kayaking, catamaran, paddleboat, sailing, sea trips to the Fort or the Ile d'Aix, Ré or Oléron, water skiing, canoe and jet-ski rides will complete your visit.
Staying in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée also means taking a break in the heart of nature. To make your visit easier, there are many walking and cycling routes that you can take, which will take you to the "Pierres Closes" (two dolmens), the locks of the Charras canal along the Charente, the inevitable emblematic "carrelets" of the landscape of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée, and the marsh, a paradise for bird-watchers who can observe herons, geese, egrets and other migratory birds at leisure depending on the time of year. By bike or on foot for the more motivated, or by car, you can also reach some of the most popular destinations in the region: Rochefort 10 kilometres away, Oléron about 40 minutes away, Châtelaillon-Plage 10 minutes further north, not forgetting La Rochelle (20 minutes away) and Île de Ré (30 minutes away)... There's no better way to discover the Charente-Maritime and make the most of your sunny stay in the village of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée.
