Relaxing and exotic, the medieval city of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne is one of those charming little villages for which it is easy to fall in love in no time. Its architectural heritage, walking routes and nature conducive to outdoor activities make it a perfect destination for family and sports stays.
Located on the banks of the Dordogne between Aurillac, Brive-la-Gaillarde and Sarlat-la-Canéda, Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne is a small treasure hidden south of the Corrèze. Romantic, the walking paths along the banks of the peaceful river will allow you to discover some of the most beautiful faces of this historic city. During your walks, you will certainly cross the road of the Chapelle des Pénitents, known for its original bell tower: if the observation of the latter is appreciated during the day, you will be dazzled by the beauty of its reflection in the waters of the Dordogne at sunset. Lose yourself in the quiet streets of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, discovering its old squares and cobbled city centre. Pass through the Porte de la Chapelle or the Porte fortifiée Sainte-Catherine to enter the old town, dotted with century-old residences built around a very old Benedictine abbey from the 9th century, whose church of Saint Peter can now be admired. Absolutely splendid, this building is worth a visit, for its Romanesque sculptures, its treasure, its Virgin and Child and its beautiful portal. Opposite the latter, you will find the Place de la Bricole and its famous Renaissance house well known for its decorations and statues: classified as a Historic Monument, you can visit it for a real jump in time! Walk along the paths of half-timbered houses, houses with facades decorated with cherubs and medallions, then take the Aubarèdes footbridge before going to the town's pier for a gabare tour to discover the Corrézienne Dordogne, on the slow waters of the river. Hiking enthusiasts will enjoy the hilly landscapes of the Belloche countryside for beautiful walks through forests and countryside, and kayaking and other whitewater sports enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the meanders of the Dordogne to indulge in their favourite activities.
As for gastronomy, the region is rich in a thousand flavours, each more gourmet than the next: here, it is even worth mentioning that eating is a real way of life. Foie gras, walnuts, ceps, confit, asparagus, vain straw, Rocamadour cheese, truffle, apples, Bergerac wines, chestnuts and chestnuts are the stars of all the good restaurants in the region. On the practical side and in order to enjoy these dishes without (too much) ruining yourself, note that the farmers' market near the Chapelle des Pénitents will allow you to taste the delights of local flavours every Monday evening during the summer season. And if you are visiting Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne in May, don't miss the gariguette festival! On the program: walks in a gabare, market, strawberry tasting and making a giant strawberry pie, requiring more than 900 kilos of strawberries... A delight for many taste buds!
Finally, when passing through Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, do not miss the Marian city of Rocamadour, the Lascaux cave (75 kilometres), the Padirac abyss (24 kilometres), Argentat, the Vézère gorges, the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park and its 1000 kilometres of hiking trails or the Pech-Merle cave (71 kilometres) and the magnificent perched village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, 80 kilometres from Beaulieu.
