In the middle of the Vézère valley, in the Périgord Noir, Montignac is one of the most unmissable sites in the whole of the Dordogne. Historical, cultural and resolutely open to nature, this charming destination will win the hearts of travellers in search of fresh air and authenticity.
With a rich history dating back to the Palaeolithic period, the town of Montignac developed above all during the Middle Ages, when it was adorned with an imposing defensive fortress overlooking the Vézère river. If it attracts visitors today, it is in particular for its famous Lascaux Cave. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this prehistoric cave, which is forbidden to visit, now has very faithful reproductions, Lascaux 2 and Lascaux 4, which you should a-bso-lu-ment visit during your stay in Montignac. With its numerous facsimiles from the original cave, its meticulous reproductions of its treasures of cave art, and its international cave art centre, this majestic site will make the eyes of young and old alike sparkle. The prehistoric site of Regourdou is also listed as a Historic Monument and is worth a visit for its bear park, its museum and its ancient cave. As far as visits are concerned, the journey doesn't stop there as the church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens is really worth the detour. Built during the 13th century, it deserves to be visited for the splendour of its 14th century bell tower and its classified paintings. In the course of your excursions, whether on foot, on horseback or by bicycle, according to your wishes, you will also discover the many castles and other posh residences that make up the built heritage of Montignac, including the superb 14th century castle of Coulonges, that of Montignac listed as a Historic Monument, the priory of Saint-Georges church, the Maison Duchêne or the Saint-Jean hospital (and its 14th century arcades) and the 17th century Hôtel de Bouillhac. You can also go through the rue Joseph Joubert, the rue de l'archiprêtre Noël, the square Pautauberge for a break in the green under its kiosk, the rue de la Pégerie, the former Convent of the Poor Clares, the Old Bridge which poetically spans the Vézère river while offering superb panoramas of the houses on stilts located upstream on the right bank of the river... Along the medieval alleys overhung by half-timbered houses, and the quays of the Vézère (in particular the Merilhou quay), all the splendour of this pretty corner of the hexagon will be offered to you!
Finally, after perfecting your visit on the kitchen side, by delighting yourself with omelettes with black truffles, duck confit, Perigord salads and duck breasts, opt for a walking or river hike, a trekking tour, a climbing or caving session, an ideal activity to do with your family! Great sportsmen? Think also of a mountain bike excursion, in the direction of Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin, Sarlat-la-Canéda, Souillac or Brive-la-Gaillarde, to perfect your knowledge of this area with its rich heritage, both historical and natural.

Don't forget to visit Rocamadour, the Lascaux cave and all around. All the sites of the Dordogne and Périgord (black and white) are magnificent.

Everything closed out of season.... Pleasant discovery of a food truck with local products and delicious duck burgers. Visit the castle and garden of Marqueysac to do. As well as a stroll on the Rivière Espérance, in gabare, at La Roque Gageac on the Norbert cruises.
