In the Dordogne department, on the border with the Lot, Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat is one of those little-known gems of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. South of the Dordogne river which flows a few kilometres away, in the country of castles and caves, this village of the Périgord Noir is located in the heart of the canton of Domme, linking the Lot to the Sarlat region. A traditional rural village, Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat is a small concentrate of everything that lovers of green tourism like: here, it is calm that reigns, in a country atmosphere that invites you to let go and escape. In terms of heritage, the town is not outdone and reveals to its visitors some nuggets, such as the church of Saint-Martial: dating from the 12th century, this Romanesque style church tells the history of the village through its various restorations, and reveals a superb architecture that will delight lovers of old stones and stained glass. But what gives Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat its character is without doubt the beauty of its houses. In the heart of the village, the houses are adorned with ochre stones and topped with limestone slate roofs, emblematic of traditional Perigord architecture. Our advice? Don't miss a trip to the weekly market in the village to stock up on local fruit and vegetables, and to push open the door of one of its restaurants! Because the other star of the Périgord, apart from its heritage, is its gastronomy! On the menu? Goose or duck foie gras, black truffles, cep omelettes, walnut pies, duck breast, duck aiguillettes with raspberry vinegar, garlic tourin, monkfish with chorizo, foie gras terrine, confits, potatoes sautéed in duck fat, stews, cep risotto, Perigord salad, cocotte eggs with Perigueux sauce, but also cabécou du Perigord and other sweet and savoury delights will delight the taste buds of the whole family.
Bordered to the south by the Céou river which flows peacefully, the town has slightly undulating hills, which will undoubtedly delight hiking enthusiasts. Also, to allow you to discover the contours of Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat and its surroundings, you can walk or cycle along a whole range of routes, sporting or not, which will take you to some of the most beautiful sites in the area. What to see? The Château de Lantis, the magnificent Château de Peyruzel, the elegant Château des Milandes, the famous prehistoric caves of Cougnac decorated with hundreds of magnificent prehistoric paintings of mammoths, ibexes and other deer, not forgetting the Abbaye-Nouvelle de Léobard. Finally, in summer, there is nothing better than a refreshing dip! For that, head for the Plage de Groléjac, 9 kilometres from Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat: in the heart of a stretch of water covering more than 15 hectares, this beach will be perfect for swimming, picnic breaks, or water sports activities such as windsurfing and pedal boats... In short, something for the whole family.
