Known as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Locronan is a real little concentrate of Brittany. 5 kilometres from the sea, close to Douarnenez and its bay, the Finisterian village of Locronan brilliantly combines history, heritage, dynamism and authenticity.
Locronan is one of the pearls of Brittany. Built entirely of granite, this town is classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and is a wonder of its magnificent scenery, as if frozen in time. The absolutely splendid architecture of its houses built between the 15th and 18th centuries have also inspired many artists, including directors who have come to shoot their films, such as Jean-Pierre Jeunet for "Un long dimanche de fiançailles", and Philippe De Brocca for "Chouans ! Here, the visitor is tirelessly drawn towards the historic heart: devoid of traffic, this pedestrian downtown is a small bubble of tranquility, which allows the visitor to browse the tangled streets of Locronan to discover its most beautiful homes. Just imagine: old stone buildings, decorated with coloured shutters, and abundant vegetation that give Locronan a very special bucolic charm. Around the central square, the Place de l'Eglise, the elegant houses with sculpted dormer windows set the tone, and plunge you into the heart of Breton history, authentic, as we like it. In the town centre you will also find small craft shops, a glass factory, art stalls, bakeries and chocolate shops perfect for tasting one of the emblems of the Locronan region: kouignettes.
A town of weavers in the 15th century, Locronan has kept many testimonies of this past, and this industrial past can be discovered at the Museum of Art and History which, in addition to plunging you into the heart of this commercial past, will allow you to discover some collections of Breton paintings from the early 20th century. In terms of built heritage, what can you see? The Renaissance mansions in blue granite, the 15th century church, the Saint-Eutrope fountain, the Penity chapel, the Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Nouvelle chapel, the Ar Zonj chapel dedicated to Saint-Ronan, the well in the Place de l'Église, the Hôtel Gauthier, the mill of the Priory at the confluence of the Apic and the Stiff, or "Menez Lokorn", the Mountain of Locronan, which is worth the detour for its exceptional panoramas on the bay of Douarnenez, the peninsula of Crozon and the basin of Porzay from its 289 meters high.
Walkers and experienced hikers will find in Locronan something to occupy their days. Indeed, there are many itineraries, adapted to walkers, cyclists and horse riders, which will allow you to discover all the singularity of Locronan and its surroundings, passing by the Névet wood, known for its druidic legends. For a few moments by the sea, head for the nearby bay of Douarnenez which will allow you to enjoy the calm and beauty of the Finisterian coastline. Strolling with your feet in the water, lazing on one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, swimming and water activities such as paddle, sailing or diving will be the icing on the cake of your holidays in Locronan.
