A Renaissance city of character, Barjac invites you to come and discover its most beautiful faces. Situated between the Ardèche and Cèze gorges, this balcony overlooking the Cévennes is the ideal place to stay if you like peace and history.
Ideally located in the heart of the Gard department, the small village of Barjac surprises as much as it turns the heads of its lucky visitors. Classified as a "Village de Caractère", it has a historic heart teeming with must-see sites. The castle of the Counts of Roure from the 17th century is one of these destinations to see: also called "Château de Barjac", this imposing building is in fact made up of three castles of different styles and ages: all connected by a wide inner courtyard, the Seigneurial Tower, the Castel Viel and the new 17th century Logis now house the town hall, but also exhibitions, a library, a cinema room and a convivial place where many festivals and celebrations take place throughout the year. Barjac is a great place to live in both winter and summer. You'll probably enjoy strolling through its old cobbled streets, with their tangled streets and squares with trees and elegant fountains. Pass through the Lower Gate to discover the Capuchin chapel, the mansions and their towers, the Upper Gate, the church of Saint Laurent, the market place and its plane trees, not forgetting the Grand'Rue, to soak up the gentle Tuscan tunes that shape the contours of the village.
In addition to its warm atmosphere, Barjac is renowned for being the ideal place to put down your suitcases to discover some of the most beautiful sites in the Gard and neighbouring Ardèche. As far as historical visits are concerned, it is the caves that will certainly hold your attention. Numerous in the sector, they fascinate more and more visitors every year. From the Grotte de la Cocalière to the sublime Grotte de Saint-Marcel, without forgetting the famous Chauvet Grotto listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a whole section of history with a "capital H" that you will be able to admire. Breathtakingly beautiful, the Grand Site de l'Aven d'Orgnac is a must do: located just 8 kilometres from Barjac, this majestic cave is one of the treasures of the Ardèche. With its gigantic underground halls, this site of extraordinary proportions offers its visitors the grandiose spectacle of the evolution of limestone over the centuries. You can also visit Aiguèze, La Roque-sur-Cèze and Monclus, all three voted "Most Beautiful Villages in France", without forgetting Goudargues ("the Little Venice of the Gard"), or the Sautadet waterfalls for a hike in the coolness of the Cèze. Finally, it is impossible not to mention Vallon-Pont-d'Arc: the pearl of the Ardèche, Vallon-Pont-d'Arc (12 kilometres away) is a paradise for lovers of hiking, mountain biking and water activities. Don't deprive yourself of a kayak trip along the Ardèche, which will offer you wonderful panoramas of the surrounding nature, and in particular of its legendary Pont d'Arc which has poetically spanned the river for centuries.

To do but quite sporty: the 24 km canoe descent of the Ardèche gorges from the Pont d'Arc. It is magnificent, grandiose. The Pont d'Arc is to be seen but it is not the best place to swim, too crowded and small beach. If you want to swim on an easy access beach, with nice pitches, go directly to Sauze (touching St Martin d'Ardèche, attention all car parks are paying) and walk up the banks of the Ardèche.

To do: descent of the Ardèche by canoe, cave of the Salamander, steam train of the Cévennes, Bamboo plantation, Haribo Candy Museum, Uzès, Crocodile Farm, Aven Grotte Forestière, Escape game in the middle of nature, Vacanisport (holiday park). Disappointed by the Sautadet waterfalls! Full of bathers despite the bans.
