Between the Rhône and the Gardon, Montfrin surprises as much as it fascinates. A small village in the heart of the famous Golden Square linking Avignon to Nîmes, Arles and Uzès, Montfrin is the perfect place to come and discover the splendour of its heritage. Ready for a stay worthy of the greatest plunges into history?

Situated about twenty kilometres from Nîmes to the west and Avignon to the east, Montfrin enjoys a particularly ideal location for visiting this beautiful corner of France. A small pearl of the Gard, Montfrin is crossed by the Gardon river which flows downstream from the town into the winding meanders of the Rhône. Occupied since antiquity, the town developed in the Middle Ages as a castrum, before the Templars and later the Hospitallers of Saint John settled here. Over the centuries, the heart of the village of Montfrin has preserved superb testimonies of its distant history. If there is one thing that cannot be missed when passing through Montfrin, it is to take a walk around its castle. Private property, easily accessible by the rise of the castle, this construction organized around an ancient Roman tower and a keep at the time of the Templars is known to have housed famous people like Louis XIII. Then go through the village town hall to discover just opposite the latter the Renaissance-style Calvière house (which would have housed Richelieu), to finally take the time to visit the church of Notre-Dame de Malpas. With its bell tower dating from 1372, its tympanum decorated with a virgin with child, its keystones in crossed ribs and its paintings, it is reputed to be one of the most beautiful Romanesque buildings in the whole of the Lower Languedoc. The Commanderie Saint-Jean of 1169 and its French-style ceiling, the Hospital Tower, but also the Saracen towers visible from the Rue des Rochers are to be added to the list of your visits. Pass through the Place Nord (where Molière is said to have met Madelaine Béjart), follow the Jules Ferry course which runs along the line of the old ramparts, and finally discover the former Chapelle des Pénitents, which has housed the municipal library since 1998.

If you take the time to stroll through its bucolic countryside, it is impossible to miss the site of La Baume: easily accessible on foot, by car, by bike or on horseback, this site dug into the rock is reputed to house 75 bee niches. Probably of Templar origin because of a cross found on the ground, this site is a must-see hiking spot for anyone visiting Montfrin. Walkers or mountain bikers will be able to take advantage of many marked out itineraries, allowing them to discover some of the most beautiful sites of the department. From the Abbey of Saint-Michel de Frigolet to the Abbey of Montmajour, without forgetting the wonderful Pont du Gard, the banks of the Rhône and Gardon rivers suitable for white water activities, or Beaucaire, Nîmes and Avignon its elegant neighbours, Montfrin is, it can be said, a real little paradise for lovers of history, gourmet gastronomy and old stones.
