For a quiet, authentic and sunny holiday, why not pack your bags for the south of France? And more precisely to Bellegarde, in the Gard? Let's go!

From its marshy plains bathed by the Rhône to its plateaus swept by the Mistral wind, Bellegarde is one of those villages that make the history of the Gard. In the Occitanie region, a few steps away from the Bouches-du-Rhône, the village of Bellegarde is about fifteen kilometres from Nîmes and Arles. Between the Costière and the Camargue, "the South of the reeds and the South of the stones" according to Alphonse Daudet, Bellegarde, rich in many influences, is undeniably turned towards water. An agricultural territory, Bellegarde offers epicureans and gastronomy lovers many delights to savour around a good table. On the menu? Fruits and vegetables galore: strawberries, kiwis, onions, apples, apricots, cherries, olives and olive oils, honeys, asparagus, melons, courgettes, tomatoes, but also (and above all!) grapes which allow for a great diversity in the local production of white, red or rosé wines, and which are the perfect accompaniment to snails, meat and other cheeses. Our advice? Opt for a glass of Clairette de Bellegarde, a well-known grape variety in the Languedoc region!

After having gained strength by discovering Bellegarde on the plate, all that remains is for you to take the time to stroll along its narrow streets to discover the beauty of its history, told through its old stones. Rich in a very ancient history, Bellegarde retains some vestiges of its past, such as its underground aqueduct, the Roman road "Via Domitia" which crosses the town, or its toll bridge called "Pont Aérarius" which allowed to cross the old marshes of the plain. In terms of religious buildings, you can discover the priory Saint-Vincent-de-Broussan of the 11th and 15th centuries, but also the church Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Bellegarde. An old oil mill from the 19th century is worth a visit, as is the Château de Belle Garde and the 12th century Site de la Tour, which offers a breathtaking view of the Petite Camargue plain from its promontory. Our advice? Take the time to walk around the Port de Plaisance on the Canal du Rhône à Sète, or to attend one of the many Camargue races organised throughout the year in the town's arenas. Bull runs in the streets of the village, encierros and bandido are also part of the program, giving you the opportunity to discover the richness of local traditions.

In addition to a leisurely walk, many activities are possible during a stay under the Bellegarde sun: hiking, cycling excursions towards Nîmes and Arles, the capital of photography, but you can also opt for trips on the canal on board a boat, and try your hand at a whole host of water sports at the Lac du Haut Broussan water sports base. Float tube fishing, jet-skiing and other sensational activities will be part of your holiday in Bellegarde.
