Dynamic and touristic, Agde is one of the most popular cities in the Hérault when summer comes. Famous in particular for its seaside resort of Cap d'Agde, its magnificent beaches and its wild nights, this city marked by history abounds in secrets to discover absolutely.
Nicknamed the "Black Pearl" by Marco Polo, Agde is the second oldest city in France. Watered by the Hérault and the Canal du Midi, its charming city is easily visited on foot or by bicycle. Rich in its history marked by Phocaean influences, Agde has inherited a very great cultural and architectural heritage. Today it still teems with many treasures : you will certainly come across the remains of ancient ramparts, 17th century mansions, the consular house and the many religious monuments that line the city. Saint-Etienne Cathedral is certainly one of the most beautiful buildings in the region : the seat of the archdiocese of Agde, this Carolingian church built in 872 was fortified in the 12th century. In Romanesque style, it is built in basalt stone, a very popular mineral in the commune : its dungeons, its round path, its machicolations and its loopholes give it all the attributes of a true medieval fortress. A short distance from the coast of Agathois is the Fort of Brescou. Former surveillance post which aimed to fight against the invasion of the English troops (as in Saint-Malo in particular), it was in turn a prison then a lighthouse. From the port of Agde, you can board a boat that will take you to the enclosure of this Fort, built on an ancient underwater volcano. The Canal du Midi is also one of Agde's must-see : crossing the city from west to east, it will allow you to visit some of the city's most beautiful monuments and districts. From the Saint-Joseph bridge to the port, passing through the Canalet bas, the Canalet haut and the round lock, its course finally ends on the side of the Etang de Thau. By bike, criss-cross the vineyards, the parks, the Bagnas Nature Reserve and the banks of the canal, for peaceful walks to the sound of the cicadas singing.
With its 14 kilometres of fine sandy beaches, it is easy to understand why Agde and its seaside resort attract so many visitors every year. Located a few kilometres from downtown Agde, these beaches are popular with families and children. You will find beach volleyball courts, playgrounds for the little ones, parasols and mattresses to settle comfortably under the Mediterranean sun. As for water sports, a wide range of activities awaits you during this stay : you can pedal boat, towed buoy, kitesurf, wakeboard and paddle on the beach of Richelieu, but also diving thanks to the underwater path of the "Plagette". You can also fish and even rent a jet ski or a boat at the marina for a pleasant stroll at sea. The Grande Conque beach nestled at the foot of the cliffs is famous for its black sand, very rare in the region : its crystal clear waters caressing the dark sand contrast beautifully with the cliffs and their vegetation. More wild than the others, it is ideal for a total change of scenery and long idleness sessions in a magnificent setting.... Finally north of the resort is Agde's most famous beach : the naturist beach. Spreading over more than one kilometre, it is bordered by numerous restaurants, campsites and residences where naturism is a must.
Famous for its festive character, the seaside resort of Agde experiences exciting nights during the summer period. The Amnesia and its open-air dancefloor, the Bora-Bora Club and the Bianca Beach are among the most popular discotheques of the whole resort : every year they gather thousands of clubbers who come to dance to the sound of the electro hits of the moment.
Finally, in terms of gastronomy, we can only advise you too much to enjoy at sunset tasty grilled sardines accompanied by white wine, Pézenas pies, croustades, fish, freshly caught crustaceans, a good braducade of mussels and cold cuts from the Black Mountain accompanied by small vegetables gorged with sunshine... A delight for the taste buds !
