Undeniably facing the sea, Saint-Nazaire is a well-known seaside resort in the Loire-Atlantique department. Lovée at the mouth of the Loire, a few steps from Pornichet, La Baule-Escoublac, Guérande and Le Croisic, Saint-Nazaire is famous for its port and its shipyards, but it also conceals many assets for successful holidays by the water.
Saint-Nazaire is a major destination for cultural and industrial tourism and has built a solid reputation for innovation and economy. Start your stay with a visit to the port, an obligatory part of your Nazairian stay: if what was once a small fishing village is today one of the most important towns in the department, it is thanks to its shipyards, also called the "Chantiers de l'Atlantique". Saint-Nazaire is today one of six sites in the world with the capacity to build ships over 300 metres in length. Venture into its shipyards to discover these giants of the seas and their spectacular size! In the heart of the city's former submarine base (over 3700 square metres in size) is the Escal'Atlantic: this fascinating museum, unique in Europe, is a real immersion into the life and history of transatlantic liners. Both visitor and traveller, you will walk in the footsteps of those who once borrowed these boats : you will discover the bridges, cabins, parquet floors, bars and passageways that so many travellers before you have walked. The submarine Espadon and the ecomuseum retracing the history of Saint-Nazaire (facing the estuary) are also among the sites to visit absolutely when you visit this city. The visit of the latter will allow you to learn more about the history of Saint-Nazaire, from prehistory to our days through the Second World War which totally destroyed the city, now rebuilt. Despite the disasters of the war, Saint-Nazaire has some of the most beautiful Neolithic sites in the department, such as the Dissignac tumulus, more than 6000 years old.
Although Saint-Nazaire is a "new town", it is not free of greenery. Marked out by parks, it invites you to stroll and discover. The Jardins d'Océanis are a true haven of peace : spread over 14 hectares, palm trees, lavender, bamboos, oaks and poplars of this green flow invites visitors to relax in "green" parentheses.
Saint-Nazaire also has 20 beaches ! Facing south and separated by promontories and cliffs, the wide sandy stretches, wild beaches and deep pine lined coves that make up the Nazairian coastline shape a superb and singular landscape. With the family, the Grande Plage and the Porcé beach are ideal for swimming. The Courance beach will be perfect for water sports fans : you can surf, canoe, windsurf and body-surf at your leisure. The white sand of the beach of Trébézy, located in a preserved environment, will be ideal for long afternoons of idleness away from the crowd. After a few dives and long tanning sessions, discover the beauty of the Saint-Nazaire coastline via the signposted itineraries that criss-cross the city : the seafront stroll will allow you to discover its 19th century villas, while the Customs path will take you through sometimes steep paths, up to the most sumptuous panoramas of Saint-Nazaire. The "Sur les pas de Monsieur Hulot" loop, the "Val de la Courance" trail and the "Villès-Martin aux Jaunais" trail are particularly popular with holidaymakers. After the land rides, head for the sea rides ! With your family, a boat cruise along the Loire and the Atlantic Ocean will allow you to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscapes : you will see the Saint-Nazaire bridge, its enormous granite lighthouse, its beaches, its cliffs, its coves, but also unique views of its shipyards and ports. Finally we also advise you to take advantage of the magic light of the setting sun, when the sea and the horizon catch fire with a sparkling light, to walk by the sea and enjoy the calm of the city, an ice cream or a waffle in hand.
