In the department of Morbihan, this port city nestling in the depths of its eponymous harbour is certainly one of the most popular cities in the region. Founded in the 17th century, Lorient, the city of 5 ports, tells its story through its heritage. City of Art and History, it preserves from its glorious past many memories that you can discover by taking the time to play along its streets all more captivating than the others. When you arrive in Lorient, it is on its quays that you like to meet up. Decorated with beautiful houses and mansions, they tell the story of the conquest of the Indies, but also the Second World War, the rise of water sports and great fishing, which will have for years made the prosperity and popularity of this maritime city, propelling it to the top of the rankings of the largest in the hexagon. Here, in the hollow of the roadstead, on the Port-Louis side, the Compagnie des Indes has left its mark forever with the Gabriel Sales Hotel, which is worth seeing, as is the Discovery Tower, the harbour enclosure, the Aristide Briand square, the theatre, the magnificent 1930s residences and the panorama of the Port-Louis citadel. To make sure you don't miss anything, take a tour of its 5 ports: the military port, the marina, the fishing port, the passenger port and the commercial port will give you a good idea of the city's maritime heritage. The submarine base of Keroman, the largest fortress of the 20th century built to house more than twenty submarines is also a must to do, as is the visit of the disarmed submarine Flore in 1989. The submarine museum, or the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly (training place for the skippers who will sail for the Vendée Globe and the Jules Vernes Trophy) will perfect your maritime knowledge, for a real dive into the history of Lorient. And to top it all off, you can't miss the sale of the fish just off the enormous trawlers; at the Lorient Marée Mill, you can smell the sea, the seaweed and the fish, and perhaps buy some grilled food for lunch, unless you are no longer in the mood for a cake or seafood in one of the many restaurants in the town... Whatever you fancy!

A jewel polished by the wind and the tides, Lorient has many facets. In addition to its historical side, and its incredible maritime heritage, the city is known for its dynamism which attracts many young people who come to live there. In addition to its twenty or so parks and squares in which to stroll, on foot or by mountain bike, Lorient has walking routes towards the Blavet valley and splendid coastal walks, such as the Promenade des rives du Scorff, and the Promenade de l'anse du Ter which are perfect for a morning jog or a walk in the sunset. And that was without counting on the beaches of the Pays de Lorient! These beaches, long and calm, are not very indented and well sheltered from the winds thanks to the island of Groix (5 kilometres offshore) which protects the city. Scuba diving in Larmor-Plage, paddle, kayak, sailing in Port-Louis or Gavres, boat hire to go swimming in Groix, jet-skiing, fishing, sailing trips, swimming... There is no shortage of activities here!

Finally, do you still hear that little music? How can you talk about Lorient without mentioning its famous and unbelievable Inter-Celtic Festival? Every year, at the beginning of August, it brings together the proud representatives of Celtic culture from all over the world.
