It is in Brittany that our discovery of the day takes us. And more precisely in Vannes, the capital of Morbihan. A medieval and fortified city, a city of Art and History, this cultural destination ideally located between land and sea will offer you an ideal setting for rest if you like the fresh air and the delicately iodized scents.
Nestled at the bottom of the Gulf of Morbihan, comfortably installed sheltered from its thick ramparts, Vannes will amaze you with its elegance and gentle lifestyle. With its old half-timbered houses and private mansions, Vannes is a real immersion in history. It has no less than 170 half-timbered houses, most of which are located around its cathedral and on Henri IV Square. Gambetta Square and its terraced restaurants will give you a well-deserved break, ideal for taking the pulse of the city. Facing the port, with its seaside resort atmosphere, it will give you a taste of the coastal atmosphere of the resort. Then take the opportunity to stroll for a few moments on the quays of the marina, to breathe in the fresh Breton air to the sound of the boats rattling: if the day trip is invigorating, we recommend you come back at sunset to admire the colours of the sky blending into the sea.
Then enter the heart of the old town through the Porte Saint-Vincent and contemplate its magnificent 17th century hotels; further on, Place des Lices will amaze you with its half-timbered houses, each more colourful than the next, and beautifully preserved. Push your curiosity to the corner of rue Noé and rue Snape to discover the Vannetan mascots, "Vannes and his wife", a man and a woman sculpted in the stone of a wealthy 16th century residence. Walk along the cobblestones of this historic city and then walk to the Saint-Patern district, passing through the magnificent Saint-Pierre cathedral and its elegant furniture, Raint-Salomon Street, des Halles Street, La Cohue (which houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts), Saint-Gwénaël Street and the Porte Prison. From the latter, the walk will plunge you into the heart of the 13th century ramparts: you will discover the gates, the slate-roofed washhouses and the old towers that dot the fortifications like the Calmont Tower and the Connétable Tower. These ramparts, which were once surrounded by moats, are now lined with splendid French-style gardens, perfect places to stroll along the banks of the Marle.
To discover Vannes from another angle, we recommend the "Promenade du Street Art": along 3 kilometres, this itinerary will take you from the underground of the Palais des Arts to the Port de Vannes, to contemplate façades painted with brio, giving the town a completely different face, much more modern and urban. Your trip would not be complete without a stop at the "Daedalus", a temple of contemporary graphic art and street art appreciated for its colourful works.
The Rabine promenade along the quays will allow you to see some of the most beautiful panoramas of Vannes, while taking you to the Oceanographic Aquarium and the Butterfly Gardens, which are perfect places to retreat on rainy days. In good weather, take a walk to the Conleau peninsula: very popular with visitors, this site is the perfect place to drink a glass of cider or taste delicious seafood platters, while letting yourself be rocked by its impressive view of the Gulf of Morbihan. It is here, at Conleau Beach, that young and old meet for sunbathing breaks.
Finally, note that Vannes is also the ideal place to learn to sail: the Gulf of Morbihan has nearly forty magnificent islands, including Île aux Moines, Île d'Houat, Île de Hoëdic and Île d'Arz.
