Modern, cultural and warm, Lille is a city where there is never a dull moment. Capital of the Hauts-de-France, this city of Art and History is one of the unmissable destinations for those who wish to discover all the splendours of France.
It's so nice to stroll through the heart of Old Lille! Rich in a wonderful architectural heritage, Lille is an eminently cultural city. With its historic district, superb monuments, houses with colourful Flemish facades and pedestrian streets, Lille is a commune that is easily visited on foot.
Overlooking the Grand-Place, the famous Old Stock Exchange is certainly the most famous building in Lille: in Flemish Baroque style, this jewel of Old Lille was built during the 17th century. It consists of 24 residences, framing an interior courtyard with arcades where booksellers, onlookers, florists and chess players like to settle. The Grand'Place is the other major asset of the northern capital: surrounded by colourful residences, it is the beating heart of this city. Its large fountain is surrounded by many restaurants where you can enjoy burgers, pizzas, pasta, but also (and especially!) delicious local dishes such as Flemish carbonade (at the restaurant "Le Coq Hardi"), maroilles tart, potjevleesch (from the estaminet "Chez la Vieille"), welsh, a part (or two) of suc' tart (sugar), chicons-gratin, fricadelle, coq à la bière or the traditional mussels and chips, real madeleine de Proust of fans of the Braderie de Lille. With white wine, maroilles, beer or Catalan, in Lille, we eat mussels and chips with all kinds of sauces! Admire the column of the Goddess, then enter the wide pedestrian streets that escape from the Grand' Place to discover what makes Lille's history: buildings of yesteryear, lively squares and authentic shops give the city a crazy charm! Place Rihour is the Palace of the same name: built during the 15th century, it is one of the few remains of the Lille city's flamboyant Gothic style. You can visit its Guard Room, its Conclave Room, its sacristy with its magnificent stained glass windows and enjoy the panoramic view of the city from its floors. And how not to mention the famous belfry of Lille? Built in 1924, the Town Hall is the building visible from almost everywhere in Lille thanks to its immense belfry classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A symbol of freedom for the communes of the North, it offers from its 104 metres high an impregnable panoramic view of the entire city: note that, however, to reach its summit, you will have to climb 109 steps... A visit that we recommend you make before eating a hearty welsh or a generous maroilles pie, of course.
Then go through the cathedral of Tereille, do some shopping in Euralille, have a coffee at the very popular Wazemmes market, buy some sweets (or two, or three!) in the famous Meert pastry shop, visit the Place du Théâtre and its Opera House, the Villa Cavrois, the Vauban Citadel, the Maison Coilliot, the Porte de Dunkerque, the birthplace of Charles de Gaulle, the Hospice Comtesse, the superb Palais des Beaux-Arts (second largest museum in France after the Louvre), the Chambre de Commerce, not to mention the Museum of Natural History! We also recommend that you take your visit a little further, to Roubaix, to discover the André Diligent Swimming Pool-Museum of Art and Industry which, in addition to its splendid exhibitions, offers a wonderful place to visit in the heart of an old art deco pool.
The Citadel Park and its Zoo
This popular 60-hectare walking area also includes a free zoo. This park invites you to discover more than 400 animals in a very pleasant green space. Also enjoy the permanent small fair in this largest green space in the city.<br />
The old stock exchange
It is undoubtedly the most beautiful monument in the city, the spectacle of sculpted decorations with magnificent garlands of flowers and fruits, in the manner of the Flemish Renaissance, has always amazed. <br />
