With the most prestigious avenue of Paris, majestic squares, museums of the foreground and sumptuous gardens, the 8th is undoubtedly one of the capital's essential districts. Dominating the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe is an excellent starting point to discover the district. Imposing, this monument, wanted by Napoleon to honour his army, was completed in 1836 and became, with time, one of the national symbols welcoming notably the tomb of the unknown soldier in 1921. From the top of its 50 metres, the terrace offers a prodigious view over Paris, from the Louvre to the Arche de la Défense. At its feet, Place Charles-de-Gaulle-Étoile is no less impressive with its 12 avenues and the incessant flow of traffic.
Between the Place de l'Etoile and the Place de la Concorde, the Avenue des Champs-Élysées invites you to the heart of one of Paris' emblematic places. With its luxury brands, its shopping galleries, its large cinemas, its large terraces of cafés and restaurants, its clubs, this mythical axis is a real temple of shopping and leisure. Walk along the avenue during the day but also at night because, still as lively, it then sparkles with a thousand lights. At the end of the Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde is just as spectacular : lined with magnificent hotels and gardens, its centre is occupied by an obelisk from the temple of Ramses II, 3300 years old and decorated with two monumental fountains.
Near Concorde, the Place de la Madeleine must also hold your attention for its beautiful Greco-Roman church, its flower market and its famous caterers. You can then continue your discovery of the 8th arrondissement by visiting a museum. Here again, the offer is considerable between the Fine Arts Museum of the City of Paris, the Petit Palais, the Palais de la Découverte, for budding scientists, the Jacquemart-André Museum, with its Italian Renaissance and French 18th century collections. Finally, if you wish to take a short break, visit the Champs-Élysées gardens or the Parc Monceau, a veritable oasis of greenery in the heart of Paris.
