With its national Manufacture, its small cobbled streets, its Asian district, its National Library and its Docks, the 13th arrondissement of Paris presents very different and all equally attractive facets. Start your visit with the oldest quarter : the Gobelins. This pretty corner of Paris owes its name to the Manufacture royale des tapisseries de la Couronne, established in 1662 by Colbert, at the request of Louis XIV. In charge, at the time, of supplying the furniture and tapestries for the king's residences, the manufacture is still in activity and observes the same craft methods as in the 17th century. Tours accompanied by a lecturer-guide allow visitors to admire the works and appreciate the know-how of the liciers.
Then set off to discover the Butte-aux-Cailles district, a small bucolic enclave in the heart of the capital. Here, cobbled streets and small houses will have trouble convincing you that you are in the middle of Paris ! While strolling, discover the Art Deco swimming pool, Daviel Street and its half-timbered houses and Butte-aux-Cailles Street. Once lined with mills and famous for having seen the first men fly away in hot-air balloons, this street now houses friendly cafés and restaurants, very lively at night. Among these, Le Temps des Cerises serves as an institution, not only for its traditional cuisine but also for its organisation into a production workers' cooperative society (SCOP).
If you want to eat more exotic, go to the Asian quarter of the 13th. Located between Tolbiac Street, National Street and Ivry Avenue, Chinatown is full of Chinese but also Laotian, Cambodian and Vietnamese restaurants. You will also find many food stores including the famous supermarket Tang Frères. Between the Gare d'Austerlitz and the Bibliothèque nationale de France (François Mitterrand site), on the banks of the Seine, you can also have your meals in an amazing place, recently renovated : the Docks. This city of fashion and design is home to several restaurants, some of which are transformed into trendy clubs at nightfall. For your shopping desires, take advantage of the large shopping centre Italy 2, Place d'Italie, or the Oslo gallery in Chinatown.
