In the Caps et Marais d'Opale Regional Nature Park, in the Pas-de-Calais department, on the border with the North, Arques is one of those authentic destinations whose secret the Hauts-de-France region seems jealously guarded.

Halfway between Dunkirk and Boulogne-sur-Mer, close to Saint-Omer, Arques is a world-renowned town. Turning towards the water, Arques is watered by the Aa which meanders between it and the department of the North, but also by many canals. First a mill until the Revolution and then a small industrial village, Arques is tirelessly open to walking. Everything starts for you at the church square, for an exciting jump in time to discover the old breweries and other spinning mills that have made the town so popular. The 18th century yellow brick mansions, the magnificent town hall, the locks, but also the imposing Saint-Martin church and the medieval castle complete your journey through history. Arques is a cultural company with a strong heritage and specialises in the manufacture of table glassware, of which it is the world's leading producer. Its glass-glass factory is really worth a visit: you can discover all the know-how of the craftsmen, and know everything about the different techniques of manufacturing these pieces that are exported throughout the world. Also make a small detour to the Fontinettes boat lift: unique in France, this engineering structure on the Neufossé Canal was used until 1967 by the barges that had to cross the steep 13-metre drop towards the southern slope of the Aa Valley. While several locks were initially built to facilitate the passage, the increasing traffic due to trade quickly caused 5 to 6-day traffic jams in the area. In order to remedy this long waiting time, in 1887, the boat lift became the ideal solution, before finally being shut down in 1967 due to the new size of the boats.

Still on the theme of water, the nautical base by the canal is also worth a visit: with its marina having 70 berths, it is a peaceful place where you can stroll around. You can cycle, rent boats, or even surfbikes, a kind of hybrid halfway between cycling and windsurfing, which can allow you to sail at up to 15 km/h for great sensations. The site of Les Étangs is recommended for hiking and cycling enthusiasts: with family or friends, this resourcing and peaceful place will offer you beautiful bucolic parentheses by the water, in the company of frogs, swans and birds that have made their home around the Rainbow Ponds, in Beauséjour or in the Malhôve pond. Several hiking trails will give you a broad overview of Arques and its surroundings, such as the "Fontinettes trail" (9.4 kilometres), the "sustainable development trail" (4.5 kilometres), the "Pavé trail" (7 kilometres), or even routes through the Rihoult-Clairmarais forest.
