Just by mentioning its name, our taste buds are in turmoil... Gourmet and exotic spa town, Saint-Nectaire is a concentrate of all that Auvergne has to offer. Particularly suitable for relaxation and escape, there is a good chance that this charming city will not leave you in the lurch.

Facing the National Reserve of the Chaudefour Valley, in the heart of the Puy-de-Dôme, Saint-Nectaire is located in the mountains of the Sancy massif. Spread out between 609 and 1011 metres above sea level in the Monts Dore massif, the village of Saint-Nectaire has its origins in the Neolithic period. Occupied by the Celts, it was evangelized in the 3rd century and has some interesting religious monuments, such as the church of Saint-Nectaire Notre-Dame du Mont Cornadore (12th century), considered by some as a real jewel of Romanesque art. Made of lava stones, it overlooks the entire village and offers its visitors incomparable views of the surrounding mountains. The village of Saint-Nectaire is distinguished by the great variety of its heritage, so for an optimal visit, start by strolling in its upper part, around the church. You will see a large concentration of dolmens and menhirs, but also many caves and other springs, witnesses of the geological richness of the station. The Cornadore Caves Museum is an absolute must see, as is the site of the Petrifying Fountains: these hot springs are now used to make art objects, made of limestone from the water of the springs.

Saint-Nectaire-le-Bas also has more than forty hot springs, which attract more and more visitors to this spa every year. Equipped with good walking shoes, follow the marked trails that criss-cross the village to discover the Couze Chambon, the Source Morange, the Dolmen Park, the magnificent Cascade de Saillant, the Marais salé, the Grottes de Châteauneuf and the Source Giraudon. In addition to hiking, the municipality is very popular for mountain biking as it is located on the Espace Sancy VTT-FFC, with more than 544 kilometres of marked cycle routes for the whole family, but also for the most sporty holidaymakers. In winter, you can take advantage of Saint-Nectaire's proximity to the Super-Besse ski resort and the magnificent Lac Pavin to discover the joys of skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing with your family!

For wellness treatments, head for the Aqualudique centre: hammam, saunas, jacuzzis and other heated outdoor pools will allow you to let go in an absolutely magnificent relaxing setting. You can also opt for more sporting sessions thanks to yoga, aquabike, or aquagym sessions given daily. With the family, the Saint-Nectaire Pedagogical Park is a must: with its walking trails and its 250 animals that the youngest can feed and caress, it is unanimously appreciated by visitors! You can see llamas, prairie dogs, reindeer, wallabies, marmots, Corsican sheep, but also kangaroos.

Finally, it is impossible to visit Saint-Nectaire without tasting its rough diamond, which is none other than... the Saint-Nectaire. In fondue, for dessert, with a good wine or gratinated, this fragrant cheese is one of the jewels of Auvergne's gastronomy. Local cold cuts with blueberries or mushrooms, cheese soup, aligot, truffles, potato pâté, Puy lentils, potée auvergne, tripoux and other flavoured cheeses will be at the rendez-vous of all the good restaurants during your holidays.
