By the town hall square, undeniably: the heart of the village, this picturesque square is worth a visit for its town hall, recognizable by its blue shutters and the fragrant wisteria hanging from its façade. Don't miss the absolutely splendid Château d'Arcangues: open for visits from mid-October to mid-December, this 1900 monument is distinguished by the beauty of its large English-style hall and its "so british" inspired architecture. If it is known for its scenery and exteriors, it is just as well known for having welcomed some stars within its walls, such as Maurice Ravel, Sacha Guitry, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Sean Connery, Franck Sinatra, Jacques Thibaud or even François Mauriac. The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de l'Uhabia (13th century) is also worth a visit: if from the outside it does not seem more original than another (except thanks to its bell tower and wooden balconies), it nevertheless houses splendid decorations, typical of the Basque Country, such as its sculpted wooden balconies, and its colored, sculpted nave decorated with numerous paintings. Not far from there, the Arcangues cemetery also attracts many tourists who come to visit the tomb of the singer Luis Mariano; if you are not tempted, you can always take a break at the foot of the cemetery, to enjoy the magnificent panorama that the square offers on the Basque Pyrenees and on the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
As for activities, Arcangues will satisfy the desires of adults and children alike. If there is one queen activity in Arcangues, it is Basque pelota: emblematic of an entire region, this sport practiced for hundreds of years is inseparable from the local heritage. You can learn about it on one of the pink pediments of the village, or attend tournaments for a total immersion in the Basque atmosphere. Amateur hikers? Arcangues is full of marked trails perfect for discovering the Basque Country and its coastline.
