If its port and its charming beaches remain a major attraction for holidaymakers, it is also its rich historical heritage and its strong link with Basque culture that seduce visitors to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a peaceful Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees, its history is very closely linked to the sea. Place of fishermen for centuries, the city was also the landmark of many privateers during the 16th and 17th centuries. The most famous of them, surnamed Coursic, served under Louis XIV and captured more than a hundred foreign ships, and today, Saint-Jean-de-Luz has a considerable number of former owners of wealthy fishing vessels.
The commune also gained a strong reputation in France, and beyond the borders, thanks to the passage of Louis XIV in the 17th century. It was at Saint John the Baptist Church in St. John of Luz that the Sun King married the Infanta Maria Theresa of Austria on June 9, 1660, following the treaty of the Pyrenees with Spain. The young monarch stayed for more than a month in the home of a wealthy shipowner, now called Maison Louis XIV. Nowadays, the descendants of the owner organize guided tours that will allow you to discover the living environment of a well-off family of shipowners of the 17th century. Classified as a historical monument in 1931, the Luzian church is also a favorite place for art and history lovers. Victim of several wars, the building was already being restored during the marriage of the monarch. Despite this, some of the oldest parts (dating from the 15th century) survived to us.
The preservation of the Basque identity is a delight for holidaymakers in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. To be discovered on the municipal pediment during the summer period : the tests of the Basque force, inspired by the Basque workers, testify to the physical strength that the latter demonstrated in order to carry out their work. The local gastronomy will not disappoint the gourmands either. Very oriented towards fish because of its rich maritime past, hake from artisanal fishing remains a specialty to be found on the markets of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Sweet lovers will enjoy two dishes from Maison Pariès, invented in the 20th century : Les Mouchous, small macaroons rich in almonds, and Kanouga, a soft caramel with dark chocolate.
