A renowned seaside resort and the jewel of the Normandy coast, Étretat is one of those destinations that is no longer (or almost) on display, as its breathtaking landscapes have toured the world. Renowned for its cliffs, gardens, surprising needle and elegance, Étretat is a delicious blend of chic and nature where contemplatives and adventurers can spend a pleasant holiday.
It is in Normandy, and more precisely in the Seine-Maritime department on the Côte d'Albâtre that the magnificent seaside resort of Étretat is located. World-famous for its imposing chalk cliffs that dominate a beautiful and long pebble beach, this resort, which was initially a simple fishing village, has become over the years an essential destination on the French coast. Inspiring Maurice Leblanc and his famous character Arsène Lupin, but also Maupassant, Matisse, Courbet, Monet and many others, Étretat is small in size, but immense in its reputation that shines all over the world.
Holidaymakers looking for rest will gladly sit on the benches on the promenade along the beach of Étretat, to read a book, or contemplate the landscape while enjoying a waffle or an ice cream, depending on the season. We advise you to walk along its small streets dotted with beautiful Belle Époque villas such as La Guillette, Clos Arsène Lupin or the villa of Orphée, as well as beautifully preserved wooden halls. If there is one thing you can't do when you visit Étretat, it's to go and see its emblematic cliffs of the Côte d'Albâtre. From the pebble beach on your left is the cliff of Aval: with its arch and its famous 70-metre high needle, it is said to contain the priceless treasure of Arsène Lupin, a gentleman burglar and well-known character in Maurice Leblanc's novel. Equipped with good shoes, you can take a path that will allow you to climb just above the arch, in order to contemplate a magnificent panorama on the sea, the beach and the cliff of Amont. It is from the latter, located on the right of the beach, that you will have the most beautiful view, worthy of a postcard, of the cliff of Aval. Also accessible from a path with many steps, the cliff of Amont is known for its chapel of the Marins. Overlooking all Etretat, the one also known as the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde chapel seems to reign on the coast: you can visit it, but what is worth the detour is above all the panorama it offers on the needle and the arch just opposite. Our good advice: if you are on site on July 14th, we suggest you picnic on the wide expanse of grass just in front of the chapel, to have a choice place to immortalize the fireworks display! The Trou à l'Homme Cave is also a must: dug in the cliff of Aval, the Trou à l'Homme is accessible at low tide and makes it possible to reach the beach of Jambourg through a tunnel. If you go there, make sure you are well informed about tide times.
As for sporting activities, Étretat is not to be outdone: in addition to being particularly loved by walkers (thanks to its GR21 in particular), Étretat is just as much for thrill seekers who can paraglide, kayak, sail, catamaran, canoe, surf or dive. If you are a golf enthusiast then we can only advise you to head towards the magnificent golf course of Étretat, the perfect place to perfect your swing. Overlooking the sea, this course perched at more than 50 meters above the sea is on the side of the Upstream cliff. Its legendary hole n°10 will offer you splendid views of the chalk cliffs... An unforgettable panorama! Finally, the Jardins d'Étretat are also to be added to your list of visits: overlooking the entire city where seagulls and gulls watch over, this garden is known for its plant structures and its unique land-art sculptures, both surprising and impressive. In addition to its poetic setting, this garden will also offer you wonderful views of the cliffs.
