Located about ten kilometres from the Atlantic coast, La Chapelle-Hermier is a peaceful commune in the Vendée. With its rural heritage, its small 12th century church and its sparkling lake, it is the perfect destination for holidaymakers seeking peace and green nature.
The Lake of Jaunay glitters as soon as the first rays of sunshine of the year. Located in the centre of the commune, it is a very friendly place where you can meet for picnics, fishing or simply relaxing on the banks. Regular boat or pedal boat trips on the lake allow you to admire the lake and its surroundings from a new angle. If you feel like exploring, don't hesitate to take one of the two paths along the Jaunay, for a simple family walk or a real sports hike. Two other itineraries will also make you discover all the corners of the commune. Great hikers will particularly appreciate the Garreau trail which, on its 11 kilometres, will take you to a wide variety of natural landscapes.
If walking opens your appetite, do not hesitate to make a small detour to the Auberge du Jaunay. Nestled in the woods near the lake, you can enjoy a beautiful view of its sparkling waters from the terrace. This cozy little pancake shop offers a wide choice of pancakes and mussels dishes from the region. And of course, everything is fresh and homemade. Attention, the restaurant is often victim of its success during the summer, remember to book in advance !
In terms of heritage, the Hermier Chapel has an undeniable rural charm that almost gives the impression of travelling through time. We will not miss the Chapel of Our Lady of Garreau, a Latin cross construction whose origins are still unknown. The local legend says that a religious saw the Virgin Mary in the waters of Jaunay and later built the chapel in homage. Another version tells that it would be a knight of the Middle Ages who would be at the origin of the building. When he was about to drown, he would have prayed for an intervention by the Blessed Virgin, promising to build her a chapel. Despite the differences between the two myths, the chapel is still an important place of pilgrimage today.
The territory of the commune was also known in the past for its numerous mills. Nowadays, only the Moulin du Chiron remains, perched on the heights of the Chapelle-Hermier. From its ten meters of height, a superb panorama on the lake and its surroundings is revealed.
To spend an unforgettable afternoon with your family, go to Câlins Ca-Ânes. The passionate owner makes you discover the wonderful world of donkeys. Donkey or cart rides, brushing animals, feeding geese and ducks... Toddlers will enjoy these unique moments of complicity spent in the company of affectionate and playful animals. And they'll love the little donkeys even more when they're just waiting for a hug !
