Nested at the heart of the bay bearing its name, in the Spanish province of Girona, the city of Roses (in Spanish “Rosas”) is a jewel of the Catalan coast. Fruit of a rich and eventful past, the city, whose origins can be traced back to ancient Greek colonies, benefits from a climate swayed by the north winds and the sea air. Following the Roman conquest during the Second Punic War, Roses then turned into the main port of the Empuries County from the Middle Ages onwards. The counts' legacy is embodied in the monastery, built over the remains of the antic city in the purest Lombard Romanesque style. From the 15th century, the city began to shield itself behind imposing fortifications from the unwanted attention of the pirates and the French navy. Throughout the centuries, Roses grew as a commercial port and rapidly became an important stop during trades with the Balearic Islands, Italy and North Africa.
Several architectural treasures can be found in the city centre, such as the Santa Maria Church, built in a neoclassical style over the 18th and 19th centuries. Not far from the city hall, on the Plaça de Catalunya, three little houses of modernist style are among the hidden gems scattered around the city. Overlooking the bay, the 16th century Trinitat Castle proudly stands on the Poncella point. Beyond a rich historic heritage, its natural resources also constitute a major appeal for tourists. Spread over the rugged terrain of the Costa Brava, several lighthouses illuminate the crystal creeks. The vast beaches, equipped for modern comfort, have nonetheless maintained the wild nature of the wide natural waters. As for the seabed, accessible from the many boats dedicated to marine observation, its precious treasures patiently await your visit.

The chef uses only fresh products, the menu 13€50 starter, main course and dessert or kf +1drink... note that the owner speaks very good french. I recommend the kitchen is tasty, varied and value for money extra. The village of Cadaques is magnificent, the views of Cap Creus and then the house of Salvador Dali. The "Louise" ice cream parlour in Roses (French boss who makes artisanal ice creams of excellent quality with multiple flavours to discover, a treat for the taste buds). The small train Roses express, visits of magnificent places on the heights of the city. For thrill seekers: Port Aventura in Taragona. Barcelona is also magnificent, Gaudi's architecture, the Remblas, visit of the Olympic site.

I recommend the restaurant "La Empordà" on the seafront: the decoration is magnificent, you eat in igloos and you also have games for the children so that they can have fun while waiting for the service. The food is good and the service is efficient. I also recommend a tapas bar on the Avingunda de la Platja (near the beach) called "Los Diamontes" run by a very friendly French woman and at a lower cost.

The centre of Roses is very pretty with multiple activities. Do not hesitate to take the car to go to Cadaqués which is a very pretty little town and l'Escala which is wilder with its cliffs as far as the eye can see. If you like jet skiing you will find small coves very romantic and magical.

During our stay, we ate at the restaurant "Rosa III": great reception and we ate really well, the staff and very pleasant. We also did the "Rosa Express": very good to know what you need to know about the city and we also did a catamaran trip with the Magic, the price and very affordable and it pleases the whole family.

Many nice and very affordable restaurants. On the other hand, it is obviously a destination for the old and the young because there are very few hiking maps at the tourist office. However, we were able to do a nice hike: 25 km along the coastal path and then turning left (before Punta Falconera) we visited the dolmen and the old Visigoth village. A very beautiful and interesting walk.

Boat trips to Cadaques: great! A bakery that makes French pastries and good coffee in the street where the ED mini-market is located. The little train of Roses: superb view. The restaurant ("Las Tres Perlas") in a small street: we eat very well there. Roses is the city we prefer, we've been going there for 20 years.

The "Panoramic" restaurant offers a varied menu; the view of the port is nice and the cuisine excellent! Empuriabrava is worth a visit, with its canals, its boat market and its huge beach. And of course Cadaques! In Rosas, very nice walk along the paths along the coasts (access very close to the apartment) and small very nice shops in the city centre with local handicrafts + pottery shop a little outside where the welcome and service are excellent.
