To think of the 18th century is immediately to imagine Montmartre and one of the most prestigious monuments in Paris: the Sacré-Cœur. However, the borough has other charming districts : Pigalle and la Goutte d'Or. In Montmartre, of course, you should see the Place du Tertre, with its pretty little houses, its restaurant terraces and its artists' easels (mainly for tourists). It is obviously necessary to enjoy the animation and admire the view from the square in front of the basilica. But it is also necessary to walk in the small streets less frequented to discover another facet of the district. Because Montmartre has many stories to tell : that of the plaster mills, that of the Paris Commune, that of the bohemian life...
The Sacré-Cœur is an essential first step. Brightly white, perched at the top of the hill, the basilica has a very special Roman-Byzantine architecture. From the top of its main dome (80 m), the view of Paris is fantastic. After this impressive visit, join the Montmartre museum to discover the history of the hill. Then, take the small streets (rue des Saules, rue Saint-Vincent, rue Girardon...) to see the vineyards and old cabarets like the Lapin Agile or the moulin de la Galette, represented by Renoir and Van Gogh. Then take the street Lepic to join the cemetery of Montmartre where rest Stendhal, Degas, Truffaut... At the very bottom of the street Lepic, the famous cabaret of the Moulin-Rouge will indicate you the proximity of Pigalle.
A former marginal and debauched neighbourhood, Pigalle is still a popular place for night festivities. Today, it is home to many trendy cafés and restaurants as well as many theatres such as the Divan du Monde, the Théâtre des Trois Baudets and the Cigale. Then go to the very cosmopolitan Goutte d'Or district. All around the Boulevard Barbès, you will discover hundreds of shops selling exotic fruits, Caribbean products, African fabrics... As you walk along the small neighbouring streets, you will find many other curiosities : shops selling clothes, design and accessories, street art works, small gardens shared notably in the pretty Bois-Dormoy. On weekends and Mondays, you can also visit the Puces de Saint-Ouen, quickly accessible from the Porte de Clignancourt.
