Location
With its 3 kilometers of ramparts and 52 towers, the upper town of Carcassonne, on the right bank of the Aude, is the largest fortified city in Europe! Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the famous and impressive medieval city of Aude, admirably restored in the 19th century by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, is one of France's most visited destinations.
If you're a lover of heritage and old stones, come and discover Carcassonne's built treasures... The majestic Gallo-Roman and medieval fortifications that encircle the city, the imposing Narbonnaise gateway flanked by two high spur towers, the 12th-century château comtal built under the Trencavel dynasty, which today houses a lapidary museum, the Saint-Nazaire basilica, with its Gothic statues and splendid 13th- and 14th-century stained-glass windows, and the Promenade des Lices, nestled between the city's two walls, are all testimonies to the past that are worth a stroll. The charming Place Marcou, with its shady café terraces, and picturesque streets dotted with souvenir and craft stalls, also punctuate the itinerary.
From June to August, the Carcassonne Festival offers classical music, opera, dance, circus arts, theater, French and international variety concerts... Also not to be missed, the exceptional setting ablaze of the medieval city on July 14, and chivalry tournaments in the lices in July and August.
