Location
The Porto Vecchio citadel was built in 1539, at the instigation of senators from Genoa. At the time, the area was known as a pirate haven. Between 1540 and 1589, the citadel was destroyed and rebuilt three times. The Republic of Genoa eventually ceded the island to France in 1768. The marina and commercial port below the ramparts is particularly popular in high season. Here you'll find bars, ice-cream parlors and restaurants, as well as the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant stroll.
