Description of the region
The DORDOGNE is the ancient province of Périgord.
Due to its location, it enjoys a particularly temperate climate, making it a pleasant region to live in all seasons.
At the crossroads of oceanic, continental and mountainous zones, it expresses its diversity.
The four colors of Périgord evoke this nuanced diversity - four countries in one.

THE GREEN PERIGORD
Stretching across the northern crescent of the Dordogne department, the Périgord Vert is so named for its verdant vegetation, numerous waterways and rich landscape and historical heritage.

THE PERIGORD BLANC
Located in the heart of the department, Périgord Blanc is named for the whiteness of the local stone, which is unrivalled in the art of sculpting. It is criss-crossed by the Isle and Auvézère valleys, ideal for fishing. The region is home to Périgueux, the department's capital.

THE PURPLE PERIGORD
Vineyards and bastides are the jewels in the crown of Périgord Pourpre, in the south-west of the département. The town of Bergerac lies at the heart of these famous vineyards (Monbazillac, Pécharmant, Montravel... among the 13 AOCs), which cover 12,000 hectares.

THE PERIGORD NOIR
In the south-east of the department, Périgord Noir opens onto the International Prehistory Pole of the Vézère valley and the Dordogne valley. The Vézère valley is home to some of Europe's richest prehistoric sites (Palaeolithic sites, caves and natural shelters). There are fifteen UNESCO World Heritage sites.

PREHISTORY
The Vézère Valley, also known as the Valley of Man, takes its name from the Vézère River that flows through it. Its prehistoric sites have earned it a place among France's UNESCO World Heritage sites. It was here, in the limestone cliffs, that homo sapiens took refuge. And it was here, at Lascaux in particular, that prehistoric art was _naquit_.
In Montignac, the original Lascaux cave, nicknamed the "Sistine Chapel of Prehistory", is no longer open to visitors, but a facsimile allows us to discover its finest frescoes. Two sectors are reproduced, bringing together the majority of cave paintings, the work of Cro-Magnon and Magdalenian man.
A concentration of famous sites in Les Eyzies de Tayac and neighbouring communes form a coherent whole in terms of prehistory: parietal paintings such as those in the Font de Gaume cave, Bara-Bahau or the engravings at Combarelles, l'Abri du Poisson, Bernifal, l'Abri Pataud, Laugerie Haute, Laugerie Basse...
At the heart of the Vézère Valley _site musée_, the Musée national de Préhistoire reflects a rapidly expanding field of archaeological research.

BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES WITH CHARACTER
Many of Périgord's medieval towns and villages, including Montferrand du Périgord, Issigeac and Saint-Geniès, are renowned for their beauty and authenticity.
Lovers of stone will enjoy strolling through these picturesque streets.
Some have even been classified as _plus beaux villages de France_. These include : Saint-Jean-de-Côle - Saint-Léon sur Vézère - Limeuil, a medieval town at the confluence of the Vézère and Dordogne rivers - Beynac, La Roque Gageac at the foot of a cliff on the right bank of the Dordogne - Domme, a French royal bastide - Belvès, the medieval town with seven bell towers - Monpazier, an English bastide, the village of Saint-Amand de Coly, and the recently classified Castelnaud la Chapelle.

THE BASTIDES
Beyond the charm of their stonework, bastides or "new towns" were built in the Middle Ages as an exemplary way of organizing an urbanized living space in a rural setting. Built on either side of the Dordogne river, they played an important role during the Hundred Years' War.
Considered a "model bastide", Monpazier is without doubt the jewel in the crown of Périgord bastides. Founded in 1284 by Edward 1st of England, the town has retained its original character (central square surrounded by arcades, perpendicular streets and ramparts).
An older French town, Villefranche du Périgord, was the gateway to the Lot-et-Garonne region. Its market hall is still home to an important cep market in season.
Whether English, such as Beaumont du Périgord, built in the shape of an H in memory of Henry III (father of Edward I), Fonroque or Lalinde, or French, such as Domme, Molières or Eymet, these "new towns" provide Périgord with charming villages full of character to discover.

RIVERS
Numerous rivers cross the entire Périgord region. The Dordogne, of course, the Vézère, the Isle, the Auvézère, the Dronne, the Bandiat, the Loue, the Coly, the Céou... these rivers, which in the past often played a vital role in the transport of goods, are now used for leisure activities: gabare trips, canoeing, fishing...
Water has always been exploited. Numerous buildings still bear witness to the exploitation of water's motive power.
These include paper mills (Moulin de la Rouzique), flour and walnut oil mills (Moulin de la Tour), paper mills (Vaux) and forges (Savignac Lédrier).

HIKING
Hiking
The Périgord region boasts some 1,130 km of long-distance hiking trails (GR). These include a trail to Santiago de Compostela, and the GR 36, which runs alongside the prehistoric sites of the Vézère valley. Another highlight is the 5600 km of walking and hiking trails.
Mountain biking and cycling
Most of the trails are open to mountain bikers. You can discover them from the centers and bases of Montagrier, Brantôme, Cherveix-Cubas, Lalinde, Vitrac and Biron. For cycle touring enthusiasts, Périgord offers 28 road circuits, covering more than 2,000 km.
The department's greenways: in Périgord Vert, between Thiviers and Saint-Pardoux la Rivière, a 17 km former railroad line has been restored. In Périgord Noir, you can go from Sarlat to Groléjac / Cazoulès, and in Périgord Blanc to Trélissac / Marsac via Périgueux.
Horse riding
There's no shortage of space in this département for horse-riding and other sporting activities such as endurance and trekking. Périgord à cheval_ (Périgord on horseback) offers trail riders a 900 km network of signposted bridle paths, with a number of "Relais d'étapes" (stopping-off points) for touring riders.
Water sports
On a fine summer's day in the Périgord, it's hard to resist a refreshing canoe trip. Combining water sports and heritage discovery at the foot of the cliffs of the Dordogne, Vézère, Dronne, Isle or Auvézère rivers is an unrivalled pleasure. More than 60 rental companies await you from Easter to October on France's longest waterways.

PERIGORD BLACK TRUFFLES AND FOIS GRAS
he cuisine of the Périgord region is rooted in traditional recipes derived from the richness of its soil. The markets bear witness to the region's culinary abundance and art of living, and in winter the stalls showcase the region's noble products: truffles, fattened ducks and geese.

A romantic getaway for two.
Away from the hustle and bustle, but just a stone's throw from some of Périgord's most beautiful sites.
Warmer than a hotel, our gypsy caravan is nestled in the heart of our woodland estate, offering you every comfort and a unique atmosphere...
To give or to be given without moderation, in any season.
