A little history:
The old faubourg of Chartrons is the historic stronghold of wine merchants. Its history is also marked by colonial trade. The district's earliest origins, to which it owes its name, date back to the 14th century, when a community of Carthusian monks settled here. The great Flemish, Irish and English merchant families arrived in the 17th century. By the 18th, the port of La Lune was the largest in France. In the 19th century, Bordeaux's wine-growing vocation was at its peak, and the district was home to the area's leading merchants. Neglected after the Second World War, the Chartrons district found a new lease of life at the dawn of the 21st century: its beautiful facades have now been restored, and its charming alleyways are brimming with antique shops, art galleries and home decoration stores. Facing the Garonne River, the former negociants whose wide porches once allowed the passage of barrels are now welcoming bistros and other restaurants.
