Location
Montrouge is located in the Hauts-de-Seine department, in the Greater Paris metropolitan area. The city, the fifth densest in France, is located near Malakoff, Antony, Bagneux and Châtillon. Close to the capital, it is also served by line 4 of the Paris metro. Long a small, sparsely populated village, Montrouge expanded in the 12th century with the arrival of Guillemite monks, who stayed until the end of the 17th century. The town was also long famous for its quarries, which provided a wealth of limestone for Parisian monuments until the 19th century. Today, Montrouge is primarily a service industry town, but it has also developed its tourist industry, and still boasts a number of interesting monuments to its rich history.
