Beautiful, tastefully renovated Bas-Navarra farmhouse (subtle blend of old and new) on a secluded hillside. Beautiful view, inviting place to relax. First floor: fully-equipped kitchenette (2 fridge-freezers. 2 microwaves, 2 gas and ceramic hobs), lounge area (telephone, fireplace/wood-burning stove and wood-burning stove). Large living room, sitting area (wood-burning stove). 3 bedrooms (2 x 160cm, 1 x 140cm, 1 x 90cm) Bathroom. Shower room with walk-in shower. WC. Tumble dryer. Upstairs: 2 family bedrooms (2 beds 90. 1 bed 140) with private bathroom and toilet.

Aldude in Basque, meaning "way of the heights" is a small village on the borders of the Province of Basse-Navarre, in a Spanish enclave where my gîte, Sarahandia, an old Bas-Navarra farmhouse, is located.
Sarahandia, a contraction of Zaroi handi, means "big hut". In the 18th century, the cadets of the Baigorri farms moved up the valley to build more modest houses than their elders living in Baigorri. The "etxe" - the house (building and land) - is indivisible, and according to Basque tradition, the eldest boy or girl inherits the whole. It is still customary to refer to a person by his or her first name and the name of the house in which he or she was born.
A door lintel in Sarahandia bears the date 1836. My great-grandfather Pierre INDA, bought "after making his fortune in America" the rural property Sarahandia,
in 1910. My grandfather Michel, the eldest of the siblings, inherited, followed by his son, my uncle Albert, still the eldest. Uncle Albert had also been to America to try and remedy the rural recession caused by the 2nd World War. The village was becoming depopulated, as the lure of the city became insistent. Back from America, my uncle modernized the farm, but remained a bachelor. This meant that the family could not be passed on in the purest tradition. He chose me to inherit the property. He died prematurely in 2002, leaving the farm in full operation. For me, this was a complicated inheritance - you don't just become a farmer!
That's how I came up with the idea of turning the house into a rural gîte, as the land was already rented out. The house had to live on, and the memories we had of it had to endure. For over two years, we devoted a great deal of time and effort to renovating the house and, above all, making it as comfortable as possible, while preserving the soul of the house: the red stones, the old beams, the identical fireplace and the furniture. Then, little by little, as we listened to the suggestions of our visitors, improvements were made, making it a spacious, friendly and welcoming place.
It was a risky gamble, but one that was fully in line with the dynamics instilled in the valley by the renaissance of the "Basque pig" thanks to Pierre Oteiza, who developed a number of initiatives.
My aim in creating this comfortable gîte was to "recharge" my guests' batteries by helping them to appreciate its privileged setting, its local people and their know-how, its enduring traditions and my desire to share with you what is also part of my history.
