Location
Aubignan is a pleasant little village in the Comtat Venaissin region of Vaucluse, right in the heart of Provence, between the famous Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail. It's within easy reach of some of the most beautiful towns in the area, including Carpentras, Avignon and Orange.
Set in a mix of hills and ancient marshlands, Aubignan has been occupied since the Palaeolithic era. It gradually developed, becoming part of a monastic complex in the 10th century. In the 12th century, it passed into the hands of the Counts of Toulouse, before becoming the property of the Comtat Venaissin, and thus of the Vatican, until 1790. Fortified in the 14th century, the town became a seigniory and then a marquisate, before seeing its architecture radically transformed in the 18th century with the construction of private mansions.
Aubignan continues to attract visitors to the region with its charm and interesting architectural heritage.
