Location
Situated on the Côte d'Azur between Nice and Cannes, the old town of Antibes borders the Grande Bleue and rivals in color. These are particularly sublime in the free commune of Safranier: cream-colored facades are bordered by lush vegetation in a vast palette of pinks, yellows, greens, reds, purples... This part of old Antibes, surrounded by ramparts, offers great prospects for strolling between the quiet, shady streets, studded with Provencal shutters.
Continue your bucolic escape to Cap d'Antibes and the little port of l'Olivette, where multicolored pointus boats waltz like a postcard from the Côte d'Azur. If you're feeling more sporty, don your walking shoes and explore the surrounding trails, starting with the famous 5 km-long Chemin des Douaniers, also known as Tire-Poil, which stretches across the entire cape. A sumptuous itinerary set against the monochrome blue backdrop of the craggy rock, punctuated by the song of the cicadas and the delicious scents of the pine forest! After all that effort, there's nothing like a swim in the crystal-clear sea: Cap d'Antibes is home to some remarkable snorkeling beaches. Bounded by a long stretch of sand, they are, on the contrary, full of rocks once you've entered the water, which makes it much easier for aquatic life to emerge. Isolated coves nestle along the way.
If you feel like it, climb up from Cap d'Antibes to the Garoupe lighthouse, which offers incredible panoramic views of major Côte d'Azur sites such as Nice, Cannes, Juan-les-Pins and the Lérins Islands.
Continue on to downtown Antibes, to discover some of its major cultural sites. The Musée Picasso, housed in the majestic Château Grimaldi, with its immense stone gown overlooking the sea, is home to some of the artist's major works: La joie de vivre, Satyre and Faune were created in Antibes during the artist's stay there. Ceramics, sculptures and paintings are scattered throughout this vast space, along with other works of modern art. Don't forget to visit the museum's terrace, where imposing contemporary sculptures in ebony tones dominate the coastline.
Just outside the old town is the charming Vauban port with its pretty white boats. One of the reasons to come here is for its fine restaurants, echoing the sweet flavors of neighboring Italy. And if you're visiting in the morning, take a trip to Antibes' Provencal market, brimming with local produce for a tasty seaside picnic!
