At the beginning of the countryside and only a few kilometres from the centre of Siena is Casa Cortile, a beautiful flat located on the ground floor of a villa dating back to the 1600s, where there is evidence of Garibaldi's stay, also confirmed by a letter from him.
The flat has been renovated on the basis of the original and is equipped with all modern comforts. It has a private loggia where you can dine al fresco. Inside there is air conditioning in all rooms and it is furnished in a modern style.
Ideal as a base for visiting Tuscany, Casa Cortile is located 4 km from the famous Piazza del Campo, the central heart of the city of Siena, where every year, on 2 July and 16 August, the Palio is run involving the various Contrade in the city in a medieval equestrian joust.
The Contrade and the Palio have remote origins: the first documents mentioning the Contrade date back to 1208, while only in 1281 is there mention of 'Expenses for the Feast of Santa Maria in August'. The Contrade as we know them today did not participate in this ceremony, and the first actual names only appeared at the end of the 15th century until they all appeared in 1546.
From ancient times, races with horses were frequent in the streets of the city, but it is not until 1633 that the first Palio run by the Contrade in the Piazza with horses is documented.
On the mornings of 29 June (for the July Palio) and 13 August, the 'Tratta', i.e. the allocation of horses to the ten Contrade participating in the Palio by drawing lots, takes place.
After the 'Tratta', the first 'Prova' is run in the afternoon, then, in the following days, the further five 'Prove' are run, of which the evening race on the eve of the Palio is called the 'Prova Generale' and the last, run on the morning of the Palio, is called the 'Provaccia'.
In addition to visiting the city of Siena, it is easy to reach the hills of Chianti and Val d'Orcia, where it is possible to visit wine cellars and taste typical Tuscan products.

The welcoming owners live on the upper floors of the house and have independent access. The flat is accessed from the courtyard shared with other people.
To be paid upon reservation: air conditioning 12€/day from 01/06 - 30/09; heating 12€/day from 08/10 to 10/04; tourist tax 2€/day for the first 4 days, children up to 12 don't pay. Security deposit 300€. Final cleaning to be paid on booking 130€ per stay. A damage deposit of 300EUR has to be paid locally. A damage deposit of 1000EUR has to be paid locally for groups under 21.
