In the heart of the Charente-Maritime, the city of Jonzac is one of those perfect destinations for vacationers looking for calm, beautiful stones and relaxation.
Occupied for several centuries, Jonzac's origins date back to the Neolithic period. Set on two hills and watered by the Seugne river, this "Most Beautiful Detour of France" has plenty to offer its visitors. Rich of a marked heritage, this charming destination has absolutely splendid monuments, like its famous castle: perched on its rocky spur, the castle of Jonzac dominates the valley of the Seugne from all its height. Built in the 15th century, this place that welcomed Mazarin, Henri IV and Louis XIV is listed as a Historic Monument. If it is worth a visit, it is above all for the splendor of its decorations, its moat and its drawbridge, but also for its panoramic views over the valley. On your way out of the castle, stop by the esplanade: you won't be able to miss the imposing statue of Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap and a plant crown, illuminating the people with her torch, a work created by the sculptor and medalist Gustave Michel in 1894. Then walk through the heart of the city: thanks to a signposted path, you will discover everything you should not miss during your stay in Jonzac. From its medieval alleys to its Renaissance castle, passing by its mills, its Republic and Alvy squares, its old gate with crenellations and machicolations (current witness of the old fortified wall), its wash houses, its remarkable Baltard style halls, its Carmelite convent, its Italian theater and its Belle Époque facades, it is all the magnificence of the local architecture that will be displayed before your eyes. The Romanesque church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais is a must-see: built in the 12th century, legend has it that Charlemagne (no less!) had the remains of Saint-Anthème, a former bishop of Poitiers, deposited there. With its beautiful façade and its eight columns engraved with human faces, it never ceases to impress its visitors.
But Jonzac is above all known to visitors thanks to its waters. A troglodytic spa of excellence, the first in the Midi Atlantique, it has been attracting holidaymakers since 1986 thanks to its thermal baths, housed in old stone quarries. With its treatments recognized for decades, Jonzac attracts curists wishing to treat rheumatological disorders, respiratory tract problems or phlebitis. Do you like water activities? With your family, the aquatic complex "Les Antilles de Jonzac" will be absolutely perfect: a huge leisure park, one of the largest in Europe, with a large tropical lagoon with a wave pool (at 29°C), but also geysers, slides and waterfalls, as well as a tropical garden, a beauty institute and a fitness area. Enough to satisfy all your desires!
As far as activities are concerned, opt for a boat trip on the Seugne river, to discover this city along the water, or for a visit to the vineyards: here, you are in the land of Cognac! Finally, Bordeaux and the Atlantic beaches are only a few minutes away (1 hour for Bordeaux, 50 minutes for Royan), so it will be easy for you to go there, either for cultural visits, or to relax on the fine sand and practice a wide range of nautical activities, according to your desires.

I recommend an exceptional masseuse on the Place du Château. Her salon is called "Soins et Lumière" and her name is Delphine. The best place to relax and let yourself be taken care of by expert hands.

A must for gourmets: the "Les Gourmandises du Château" pastry shop at the foot of Jonzac Castle. The Jonzac Antilles: aquatic complex for a relaxing moment. To visit: the city of Saintes 40 minutes away for its historical heritage and Gallo-Roman remains.

While walking around (going to see Aubeterre-sur-Dronne: a very beautiful city), we had lunch "Chez Poirier" (in Bardenac) for a very competitive price: a simple place where we discover flat after flat the richness of the menu.

For lovers of walking, the setting is really very nice with its lake and the animals that surround it. We also enjoyed the restaurant de la Seugne at the Hôtel de l'Écu: a very good restaurant.
