Between Royan and the Ile d'Oléron, on the Côte de Beauté, Les Mathes invites you to discover an exceptional seaside resort. Between preserved coastline, vast forests, heritage and numerous activities, your holidays will be placed under the sign of wonder.
The Atlantic coast of the Mathes resort offers a remarkable natural setting to enjoy the joys of the sea. The beaches of La Palmyre, the lighthouse of La Coubre, the Wild Coast, the Pines de Cordouan are magical places for swimming or lounging on the fine sand. But the most magical beach is undoubtedly that of Bonne Anse, sheltered in a natural bay almost closed by a long sandbank. At high tide, it is an ideal place to practice many nautical activities : sailing, kayaking, kitesurfing... At low tide, it invites you to bring a landing net and a basket to indulge in the pleasures of fishing on foot.
Then discover the village of Mathes and its pretty seaside resort of La Palmyre. In the centre of the village, admire the beautiful church of Saint-Cyr and Sainte-Julitte. Built in the 11th century, it was heavily remodelled in 1671, retaining its Romanesque style. Its bell tower was built later, in 1870, in a neo-Gothic style, and has a bell of 1788 classified historical monument. In La Palmyre, enjoy the superb villas built at the beginning of the 20th century such as the Russian villa, the Grand Logis or the villa Le Sextant, designed by Le Corbusier. Then join the lighthouse of the Coubre and, after having climbed some 300 steps, enjoy the fabulous panorama on the coast and on the bay of Bonne Anse.
Strolling along numerous hiking and cycling paths, Les Mathes encourages you to spend your holidays forgetting your car. On foot, you can reach the zoo of La Palmyre, one of the most important in France, the Luna Park, the largest amusement park in the Royal region or the superb forest of La Coubre. By bike, take the Vélodyssée which will take you to Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, Royan, or, towards the North, to La Tremblade or Marennes. After a full day, treat yourself to a gourmet break in a good restaurant and taste the local specialties : Marennes-Oléron oysters, gratons, gigorit, marvels, pineau des Charentes...

Good plan: long cycle paths and good bike rides. Beaches very close by. Sea walk and tour of the Boyard military fort. The La Rochelle bunker + view of the submarine base. Cognac and its "cognathèque". Some sites and fortified citadels. Quite close too: the village of Oradoye sur Glané for an immersion in history.
