Faced with the splendours of the island of Bréhat, Paimpol, in the department of Côtes-d'Armor, is one of those irresistible little villages whose secret only Brittany seems to hold. With its port of character, its shipowners' homes, its natural areas and its beaches, Paimpol will seduce lovers of wide open spaces and nature holidays.
Marked by its maritime history, the city of Paimpol offers a perfect setting for a holiday in the calm of the Breton coast. You will appreciate the softness of life of this charming city, ideal for strolls through its half-timbered houses, picturesque alleys or its fishing and yachting port. The rue des Huit Patriotes in particular deserves your attention for its 15th century residence (classified as a Historic Monument) called the "Maison Jézéquel" which has housed a hardware store since 1886. Not far from there: the Latin Quarter and the Rue des Islandais (where shipowners used to recruit crews), but also the Place du Matray, the Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Nouvelle church and the Old Tower of the old church are among the remarkable architectural treasures of the town. But if there is one major building in the Paimpol area, it is the magnificent Beauport Abbey: built at the very beginning of the 13th century, this maritime abbey located facing the sea in the small village of Kérity is located in the heart of a truly enchanting preserved environment. Listed as a Historical Monument and protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, this Gothic abbey (largely in ruins) is the ideal place for a stroll: with its flowered gardens, meadows where cows and sheep graze, its coastal path and its forest path, it promises beautiful walks with beautiful views over the coast. On the Paimpol side, we can only recommend Pointe de Guilben, Pointe de Kerarzic, Anse de Beauport and Baie de Poulafret for beautiful sporting excursions.
Paimpol is also famous for its delicatessens and numerous restaurants in which you can taste the famous "Paimpolaises" (local oysters) and discover a cuisine with very... iodized flavours. Scallops from the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, Breton shrimp, Bernian shrimp, sea spiders, abalone, paimpolaise cod, grilled lobsters ("le bleu de Loguivy"), prawns on skewers or monkfish medallions will delight fans of ocean flavours. Accompanied by vegetables from the fertile "golden belt" of the Leon such as artichokes, pink onions, potatoes and cabbage... it is a delight! However, it is impossible to stay in Brittany without eating delicious traditional pancakes, from the most generous complete to the simplest "butter-sugar", you can tell us all about it! Kig ha farz, salted butter caramels, Dinan gavottes, far breton and kouign-amann complete the picture of the unforgettable flavours of your visit to Brittany.
As for swimming, Paimpol has some beautiful beaches where you can enjoy long relaxing sessions under the Armorican sun. Boulgueff Beach", "Cruckin Beach" and "Tossen Beach" are the three main beaches of the resort. You can swim, read in peace, but also sail or kayak to discover the splendours of the coast.
Hiking fans? The territory of Paimpol is criss-crossed by more than 60 kilometres of coastal and walking routes for all levels, including the famous GR34. You can reach the Pointe de l'Arcouest, where the landing stage for the island of Bréhat is located (€10.30 return), well known for its typical Breton homes, postcard landscapes, superb beaches and thousands of flowers. Less than an hour away, the wonders of the Pink Granite Coast await you: from Perros-Guirec to Trébeurden, it offers its visitors magnificent panoramas on the turquoise of its water. Finally, if Ploumanac'h is one of its highlights, the famous Sentier des Douaniers located on the GR34 promises very beautiful walks, with incomparable views of the blue sea, the Seven Islands in the distance and the Mean Ruz lighthouse.
