Wedged between Andernos-les-Bains and Lège-Cap-Ferret, Arès is a pretty little seaside resort in the north of the Arcachon Basin. Oyster farm port and superb nature reserve, this commune in the Gironde department is 45 kilometres from Arcachon and 50 kilometres from Bordeaux. Ideally located on the Basin, Ares will allow you to enjoy quiet stays to the rhythm of the boats that come and go in its magnificent bay.
A natural destination par excellence, Ares has some exceptional sites on its territory, halfway between forests and oceans. To begin, you will need to discover the magnificent Réserve Naturelle des Prés Salés d'Aquitaine: the largest salt meadow reserve in the region, this tide-shaped protected area is home to extraordinary flora and fauna. In all, more than 500 hectares of dunes, salt meadows, mudflats and forests provide a refuge for many birds such as herons, egrets, kingfishers, ducks and geese according to the seasons and nesting periods: when you visit, don't forget your camera to capture the magnificent colours of this reserve with its changing beauty according to the seasons. Straddling the municipalities of Arès and Andernos, the Sensitive Natural Area of Saint Brice will be the perfect place for family walks. Composed mostly of freshwater ponds and pretty trails, it is definitely worth a visit! You will not be able to stay in Ares without visiting its oyster port: with its huts colored blue, yellow and green, this most picturesque district is a place of stroll adored by tourists as well as by Arésians and Arésiennes. In addition to being a great place to stroll, you can board for sea outings, but also taste oysters for sale directly on the port or in one of its seafood restaurants. If you don't feel like a seaman's foot, you can always try fishing on foot, a real institution on the Atlantic coast. This fun activity for young and old alike will allow you to collect clams, crabs, knives, shells and shrimps, all seafood products washed up on the sand of the beaches of Arès at low tide. If there is an unusual visit to make during your stay in Ares, it is the one of your Ovid: yes yes, you read well, there is an Ovid in Ares! The very first landing ground for UFOs, this UFO airport was inaugurated in 1976 on the occasion of the 3rd Oyster Festival in order to facilitate the landing of potential visitors from elsewhere in the galaxy. Finally, the aerium, the old station, the Romanesque-inspired Saint-Vincent de Paul church and the Tour d'Arès at the end of Avenue de la Plage complete the picture of the buildings and monuments to visit during your holidays in Gironde. There are also many guided tours organised throughout the year in the town: mushroom picking, walking with your feet in the water, storytelling, discovering the Salt Meadows with a naturalist guide, moonlight walks, wine tasting outings, guided tours of natural sites and trail games will allow you to discover the uniqueness of Arès in a fun way.
After all these visits, what could be better than to opt for long sessions of idleness on the beaches of Arès? La Conche de Saint-Brice and its landscaped swimming area is the perfect place for family swimming sessions. The beaches of the Bassin d'Arcachon between the Conche de Saint-Brice and the Jetty will also delight children who can swim in their warm and shallow waters without worries. Water sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the "Plage d'Arès" water club to take a boat trip on the Basin, sail, catamaran, surfboard, kitesurf, stand up paddle and many other activities. Longer and wilder, the Atlantic beaches are about ten kilometres from the town of Arès. Easily accessible by bike, the "Plage Grand Crohot" in the commune of Cap Ferret is the closest to the centre of Arès. It will certainly delight surf lovers and families who can easily find a place to plant their parasol on this vast expanse of white sand.
