About fifteen minutes north-east of Dax, 30 minutes from the lake of Soustons and about forty kilometres from the Landes beaches, Pontonx-sur-l'Adour is one of those quiet little towns where families like to put down their suitcases. Ideally situated and far enough away from the big tourist destinations to avoid the crowds, this commune in the Landes is the perfect place for a holiday under the sun.

In the New Aquitaine region, just north of Dax, Pontonx-sur-l'Adour is watered by the winding meanders of the Adour river. In the heart of the Landes forest massif, this village developed during the 12th century thanks to the establishment of the Benedictine priory of Saint-Caprais. Its castle is also at the centre of its history as it was transformed into a royal estate at the end of the 15th century, before the barony of Pontonx was finally converted into a marquisate under Louis XIV. A peaceful bourgeois village, it became a real economic centre over the centuries thanks to the installation of gem factories, an airfield and food processing industries.

Today a small paradise of nature, the commune takes advantage of the rich biodiversity of the Adour plains to amaze both young and old hikers who will find a whole arsenal of walking routes for all levels of walkers. The fauna discovery trail is a must to do, as is its observatory which will allow you to familiarise yourself with the animals of the region: grey geese, tawny dragonflies, but also eagles, harriers, frogs, ducks, herons and other sandpipers will amaze young and old alike. The Barthes Reserve is also a real sanctuary for the local flora and fauna, so, thanks to a vast 93-hectare site, you can enjoy observing, but also hiking thanks to two discovery trails, perfect for family excursions. Back in town, it's impossible not to take a walk around the bullring at Pontonx-sur-l'Adour: Moorish style, horseshoe-shaped, they host numerous bullfighting shows in the summer, as well as Landes races during the annual festivities. The Fête des Barthes, the Fête de l'Asperge, the Fêtes de Pontonx, Carnival, Christmas and the celebrations of Sainte-Cécile also punctuate the local agenda throughout the year.

Finally, it is impossible to stay in Pontonx-sur-l'Adour without visiting Dax, or the beaches of Vieux-Boucau for example (40 minutes away), which are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports such as surfing, sailing, paddle, kitesurfing and many others, all of which are sure to delight the whole family.
