On the edge of the Loire Valley and its sumptuous castles, Orléans is ideally located, only one hour from Paris. Cultural, elegant and surprising, this historical jewel will amaze you with the beauty of its heritage.
Known for its fine architecture, Orléans, capital of the Centre region, is a city of Art and History adored for its dynamism and its privileged geographical location. A small town that has everything great thanks to its influence, it has long inspired dreamers, history lovers and nature lovers. What comes to mind when we think of Orléans is certainly its very old and beautifully preserved half-timbered houses. Take the time to discover the charm of this former royal city, through the alleys of its lively old town, very popular with young people for its terraces and small comforting restaurants. If there is one person you will never miss when you visit Orléans: Joan of Arc. Omnipresent in the city, Joan of Arc played a very important role in the liberation of Orléans from the hands of the English on May 8, 1429. You will be able to see it proudly represented on its horse Place du Martroi but also on pedestrian crossings, on coffee shops signs, or in the famous cathedral of Orléans. As one of the 5 largest Gothic cathedrals in France, St. Croix Cathedral is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful monuments in Orléans. Built in 1287, it was not inaugurated until 1829; however, it has welcomed famous figures in the history of France, from Joan of Arc to Henry IV, including Louis XIV. Walk around the Gallo-Roman enclosure along the rue de la Tour-Neuve, go through the rue de Bourgogne to discover the half-timbered houses for which Orléans is famous and discover the Tour Blanche, the only remains of the towers of these ancient fortifications. Visit the Collegiate Church of Saint-Pierre-le-Puellier, the Parc Floral de la Source, the 11th century Saint-Aignan crypt, as well as the Groslot hotel and its amazing 16th century facade, the Cabu hotel, the Maison de la Pomme and the Maison Sancier. Is the weather gloomy? Push the door of the many museums that dot Orléans, a cultural city par excellence! From the Museum of Fine Arts to the Museum of Natural Sciences, the Historical and Archaeological Museum of Orléans or the Joan of Arc House, you won't know where to start.
The banks of the Loire are the ideal place for bucolic walks on its delicately wooded quays, adored by the onlookers who come to find a little freshness in the sunny days. Embark on a leisurely stroll on the Loire to discover the splendours of Orléans, or cycle along its banks for a more sporting excursion! The "Loire à Vélo" is an 800-kilometre itinerary that is very popular with cyclists, who, every year, attack the wonders of the Loire on its cycle paths.
Orléans is also a strategic place to set down your suitcases to discover the most beautiful treasures of the Loire Valley: its castles. Chambord, Meung-sur-Loire, Beaugency and Blois in particular are less than an hour from Orléans! Nature lovers can also head for the plains of Beauce or the Orléans forest: with its wild hyacinths, daffodils, blueberries and thick lily of the valley rugs, this breathtaking reserve is rich in magnificent biodiversity. The Sologne and its hiking trails like the GR 3, but also the GR 32 and the viewpoint of the Caillettes on the commune of Nibelle are really worth a visit, we recommend you to add them to your holiday "to do list"!
We had lunch on the "Bateau Lavoir", visited the art museum and, in the evening, the sound and light show on the cathedral: a magnificent show. Boat trip on the Loire River. Visit of the floral park of La Source.
