For quiet stays, far from the crowds, what could be better than opting for the Dordogne Valley? Full of historical and cultural treasures, it hides in its valleys magnificent nuggets to discover, just like the town of Carennac.

Spread over its rocky spur along the banks of the Dordogne, Carennac is classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France". At the foot of the Causse de Gramat, it has been occupied since Gallo-Roman times, but is mainly marked by the influence of the very beginning of the 11th century. A true open-air history book, it reveals to its visitors splendid alleys marked by the seal of the medieval era. A Cluny site, renowned for its high residences with elaborate windows and beautiful honey-coloured stones, Carennac has many historical sites to visit, starting with its emblematic Saint-Pierre church. Well known in the region for its magnificent Romanesque tympanum decorated with fantastic animals and its sublime sculpture of the Tomb Ratification (in Gothic style), this Cluniac priory built during the 11th century is truly worth a visit, both for the splendour of its church and for that of its Roman cloister, both majestic and peaceful. Take time to stroll through the courtyard of the monastery's priory to admire the Maison de la Tourelle and the Tour du Prieuré. After these visits, don't miss the visit to the Château des Doyens. Former residence of François de Salignac de Lamothe de Fénelon (future Archbishop of Cambrai, author of the novel "Les Aventures de Télémaque"), this jewel of history is one of Carennac's emblems. In Renaissance style, it nowadays houses several exhibitions on the bastides of the Lot, and on the richness of the local heritage. If it is worth a visit for its scenery, its beautiful corner towers, its ceremonial room and its ornaments, note that it offers very beautiful views from its high elaborate dormers. And for an unobstructed view of the village, we recommend you to go to the Carennac Bridge, from where the view is splendid over all the old buildings of the town.

Carennac is also the ideal place to enjoy sporting activities on the Dordogne. By kayak, canoe or canoraft, this armchair tour of the surroundings of Carennac is perfect for families and friends. The banks of the Dordogne are also ideal for cycling, mountain biking or hiking, for walks in the shade and coolness of the river.

Finally, do not hesitate to discover the surrounding countryside, dotted with magnificent and classified cities. The Gouffre de Padirac and its admirable underground rivers (5 kilometres away), the castle of Castelnau-Bretenoux, Loubressac and its magnificent panoramas, Lacave and its splendid caves, Souillac, Gramat, Collonges-la-Rouge and the gourmet city of Rocamadour (16 kilometres away) are among the most visited sites in the region, which we recommend you visit during your stay in Carennac.
