Between the Causses and the Cévennes, in the heart of the legendary Cévennes National Park and the great site called "Gorges du Tard et de la Jonte", Meyrueis is a real nugget. A village nestled in the hollow of the mountains and with a particularly generous vegetation, Meyrueis is an ancient fortified town. A Protestant citadel, it has kept many vestiges of its rich past which will not fail to delight lovers of history and old stones. There are therefore many monuments to see during your stay in Meyrueis, such as its emblematic Protestant temple built on an octagonal plan, which is very rare in the country. In the heart of the village, the traces of the city's commercial past stand out in the eyes of the walkers: for a long time specialized in the woollen activity and hat making, the town has preserved some magnificent residences which were once the homes of the owners of the woollen spinning mills, and other cotton and silk stocking factories. The Maison des Viguiers (16th century), the Maison Bragouse de Saint-Sauveur (18th century), the house and square Jean Séquier, without forgetting the Maison de Joli de Morey (18th century), the Maison Maurin, the Convent Sainte-Marie, the Maison de Thomassy or the Maison Cavalier (18th century) and its elegant shell balcony are among the most remarkable in the town centre. You can also visit the Clock Tower at the corner of the ramparts, the Placette, the Pont des Six Liards, the Old Temple, where the first Protestant temple of the city, built in 1580, once stood, before passing through the Porte Méjeane to discover the Maison Portalier, an old medieval house that used to host cabarets. The Chapellerie Veyrier, the quays of the Pont-Vieux and the Ferradou plan will complete your visit of the heart of Meyrueis.
Right in the middle of a site classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site for "Mediterranean agropastoral landscapes", Meyrueis is a small paradise for lovers of outdoor activities who will find a whole host of nature sports to discover. Several walks are to be done in Meyrueis itself, such as the Balade du Rocher du Château. Starting in the heart of the medieval quarter, this small 1.6 kilometre walk will take you to the top of the Rocher du Château, from where the views over the town and the first foothills of the Aigoual are breathtaking. Two kilometres from the centre of the town, in the Jonte gorges, the Roquedols estate and its romantic-style castle is another key stop for those who love to hike. In the heart of a secular forest planted with huge and bushy trees, the walk is definitely worth it! In these same gorges, the Sentier des Corniches will satisfy the seasoned sportsmen, who can also try their hand at climbing or slacklining in the splendid Grotte de Dargilan (also called the "Grotte Rose"). In all, there are no less than 19 marked walking trails that you can walk along for a weekend or a week's family holiday in Meyrueis.
