Located in the heart of the vineyards, the capital Bratislava is worth a visit : located on the banks of the Danube, not far from the border with Hungary and Austria, its old town is known for its many lively cafes and bars. Climb all at the top of Bratislava Castle : right in the city center, this imposing building is perched on a hill overlooking the Danube and the capital. From this castle, you will have a breathtaking view of the vineyards and dense forests of the region.
Further south, about a 4-hour drive from Bratislava, you will find one of the jewels of this country : "Slovak Paradise". Culminating at 1270 meters above sea level, this natural park considered as one of the most beautiful places in Slovakia is ideal for hiking. Take its bridges, its ladders, its walkways for a sporty walk in the heart of a preserved nature. At the turn of a stream, a cave or a lake, the most patient holidaymakers may have the chance to see brown bears, golden eagles, wolves or lynx.
As for gastronomy, you can discover many traditional restaurants by visiting the country. Taste "bryndzové halusky", the most popular national dish in Slovakia : pasta made from potatoes and sheep's cheese, sometimes accompanied by grilled bacon. Very popular and must not be missed, the "zemiakova placka", a potato pancake stuffed with paprika beef absolutely delicious. As the country has a strong wine-making tradition, you will also be able to taste the wines of the Small Carpathians, or the "Slivovica", a plum brandy produced in the Slovak mountains.
