Seven kilometers of Mediterranean coastline, long sandy beaches and pebbly creeks lined with cliffs... If only these words are already dreaming more than one, the Escala is much more than a destination of "sol y playa". The seaside resort of the Costa Brava in Catalonia, this ancient fishing village has in fact housed several great civilizations over the centuries and its historical heritage continues to be celebrated in the same way as its culinary specialty, anchovy.

The historic center of l'Escala contains unique and unforgettable sites illustrating the roots of the city. The Alfolí de la Sal, once used as an anchovy warehouse, testifies to the monopoly of the Escala in this activity which allowed it to thrive for centuries. Located in a building built in 1697, it has been converted into a cultural center offering exhibitions and concerts. Nearby, the Church of St. Peter, built between 1701 and 1739, is an interesting mix of two distinct artistic eras. Indeed, the interior of the architecture is Gothic in style but its façade, whose construction was completed in 1761 only, belongs to the Baroque movement. Closer to the seafront is the marine cemetery, a neoclassical monument of 1835. It has been forty years that it is no longer in use but space, of remarkable beauty, remains a favorite place for amateurs art. Victor Catalá, an emblematic figure of Catalan literature, was buried here.

But for a real journey through time, it is the Museum of Archeology of Catalonia that will have to surrender. Built on the remains of a Greek city, Empórion, and a Roman town, Emporiae, this site traces the life of the first inhabitants of Empúries, gateway to the great civilizations on the Iberian Peninsula. In the summer, theatrical visits plunge visitors into the heart of these ancient cities.

L'Escala is full of festivities celebrating its history and traditions. Among them, the Anchovy Festival (of course), preceded by the gastronomic route of the Tapa de l'Anchois (still), is honoring the culinary specialty of the commune. To revive its historical origins, the Greco-Roman fair Triumvirat Mediterrani presents workshops as well as reconstructions of the life of these civilizations. Finally, the Gastromusical festival has brought together cooks and artists since 2007 at the Molí de l'Escala restaurant (which also serves an excellent foie gras with olives and anchovies !).

Catering: I recommend the restaurant "Marebe" (avinguda de Rielles) especially for its exceptional pizzas and its zarzuela, quite expensive, but the price is justified.

L Escala very beautiful resort, ruins of Empuries to visit, near Girona (very beautiful city). Montgo Beach, Estartit and Pallafrugel are magnificent.

Very good restaurants nearby: we enjoyed "La Gruta" and "Le Cal Galan". Small market every morning at Plaça Victor Català for excellent fruits and vegetables. The beach at the entrance to Empuries is open to dogs.

The walk along the bay is magnificent, the ruins of Empuiries and the small village are also worth seeing. Restaurant side: we were thrilled by the Gastroburger and the "Le Patio".
