A true architectural and historical journey, Montpellier surprises by the richness of its buildings and historical monuments. To better contemplate this mythical city, there is nothing like strolling along its streets, sometimes medieval, sometimes contemporary, to discover its architectural prowess. Start your visit with a breakfast on the mythical Place de la Comédie: the nerve center of Montpellier always in full effervescence, the square is lined with restaurants and cafe terraces where you will love to settle down to better take the pulse of the city. The largest pedestrian area in Europe dominated by the majestic Comédie Opera House, it is THE place to be in Montpellier. Then take the direction of the rue de la Loge to enter the historic center of old Montpellier where narrow and winding streets have kept all their charm of yesteryear thanks to the medieval vestiges that line it. You will pass by private mansions of the 17th and 18th centuries that make up the Ecusson (nickname of the historic center), and discover its secret or animated squares like those of Castellane or Canourgue. The latter, known for having been the center of life in Montpellier in the 17th century, is surrounded by numerous private mansions scattered around the Unicorns fountain such as the Sarret mansion, the Cambaceres mansion and the Richer de Belleval mansion. A little further on, the rue de l'Ancien Courrier, narrow, vaulted and paved with white marble, as well as the rue des Trésoriers de la Bourse, are among the most beautiful streets of the city, not to be missed during your visit. Pass under the Arc de Triomphe at the end of rue Foch and continue your stroll on the promenade du Peyrou. This two-level park dating from the 17th century offers beautiful views of Montpellier, the Cevennes and the sea. In its center, you will find an imposing statue of the Sun King, as well as a magnificent water tower, emblematic building of the promenade. For a "green" bubble, head to the Jardin des Plantes of Montpellier: founded in 1593, this historic garden is one of the oldest in France, with its magnificent collection of more than 3000 species of trees, plants and flowers. A little further on is one of the most majestic buildings in Montpellier: the Saint-Pierre cathedral. Located on rue de l'Ecole de Médecine, this Southern Gothic work of art built in 1364 is one of the few buildings to have survived the Wars of Religion. Its impressive porch and its works of art have made it very popular with both visitors and Montpellier residents.
Visit the Saint Roch district to admire its medieval streets such as those of Valfère, Argenterie or Bras de Fer, and head for the Antigone district: with its airs of Ancient Greece (especially on the side of the Place de Thessalie), this unique neo-classical district is Montpellier's master district in terms of architecture and design, of which the Hôtel de Région (avenue de la Pompignane) is one of the flagship buildings. Don't hesitate to go there at night when the buildings are lit up, the district takes on a whole new dimension.
Art lovers, if there is one museum that you must visit during your stay in Montpellier, it is the Fabre museum. With its large collections of masterpieces including those of Eugène Delacroix, Eugène Soulages and Gustave Courbet, it is the cultural place in vogue in Montpellier and has been for several years, and is considered one of the most beautiful museums of Fine Arts in Europe. But visiting Montpellier is a bit like walking through a huge open-air museum. During your wanderings, you may be surprised to come across the city's tramways: "dressed" by Christian Lacroix with amazing colors and shapes, they are like paintings in perpetual motion and contribute greatly to the originality of the town.
Finally, being only a few kilometers from the sea, Montpellier will allow you to spend long afternoons relaxing under the Mediterranean sun. From the city center, you can go by public transport (line 131 and 106 in particular), by bike or by car to the beaches of Carnon, La Grande-Motte, Palavas-les-Flots or to those of Le Grau du Roi, and take advantage of the many water sports activities offered along the coast, from surfing to catamaran, including paddle, kitesurf, sailing and jet-ski.
