Facing Vic's pond, in the heart of the Hérault, Vic la Gardiole unfolds its charms to those who know how to appreciate them. Halfway between Sète and Montpellier, Vic La Gardiole is one of those small villages typical of the Mediterranean, but also a tourist destination adored by lovers of beautiful medieval villages, where authenticity and picturesque combine wonderfully.
Between Mediterranean ponds and forest massifs, between hills covered with scrubland, plains of Muscat and protected barrier beaches, Vic La Gardiole is a perfect holiday destination to discover the complexity and singularity of the landscapes bordering the Mediterranean. You will love strolling in its old typical Languedoc village, through its cobbled streets entangled around its 12th century church Sainte Léocadie. This fortified building is one of the most beautiful of the city : of military type, this fortress built to defend the city of the invaders knew how to preserve its stained glass windows, its loopholes, its machicolations and its walkway. Walk through the woods of the Aresquiers and walk to the fortified domain of Maureilhan to admire its castle, Roman walls and Renaissance gate. As you wander through the town, you may come across a number of ancient and prehistoric remains, such as the Oppidum de La Roubine and its Roman villas, Roman tombs, Gallo-Roman remains on the edge of the Vic pond, a Neolithic cave and a Neolithic station to the north-west of the town. Living mainly from agriculture, the village is famous for its wine-growing activity and especially for its production of Muscat petit grain, very appreciated by locals as well as visitors during the summer heat. Located between the slopes of the Massif de la Gardiole and the sea, the vineyards attract every year many hikers and wine lovers curious to taste the local grape varieties. You cannot visit Vic La Gardiole without tasting Muscat de Mireval or the famous Muscat de Frontignan ! As an aperitif or with a meal, to accompany asparagus sands, brasucade mussels or shellfish, it is a real delight.
As far as nature is concerned, there are many areas to explore in the Vic La Gardiole area. "Gardienne du Vent", the Gardiole Massif is one of the local pride : stretching over nearly 15 kilometres, this rocky and limestone massif shaped by erosion is dotted with numerous valleys and ravines. An incomparable viewpoint to discover the great blue, La Gardiole Mountain offers visitors breathtaking views of the Gulf of Lions. Dominating the vineyards, the Pays de Thau, the garrigue plains and the communes of Balaruc les Bains, Frontignan, Fabrègues, Gigean, Mireval, Balaruc le Vieux and Vic La Gardiole, this massif is a real invitation to hiking. Three marked trails cross the massif, to allow you to discover the remarkable sites of the department, but also the wild fauna and flora of the Gardiole which conceals more than 700 species of plants, from thyme to rosemary while passing by lavender, sarsaparilla and pistachio trees.
On the beach side, the Aresquiers beach is famous for being one of the most beautiful wilderness areas and one of the most isolated in the Hérault. Its white sand covered with shells calls for long breaks of rest under the Mediterranean sun. Free from any construction because of its protected coastline, Vic la Gardiole's lido is a small corner of paradise for nature lovers, but also for kitesurfing enthusiasts who will find very good spots to indulge in their favourite sport. Walk along the beach and enjoy the shade of the Bois des Aresquiers to take beautiful walks in peace. Its magnificent and dense pine forest made up of Aleppo pines, maritime pines and holm oaks offers magnificent views over the lagoon of Ingril, the ponds and the sea. Fed in fresh water by the Robine stream, it is famous for the many species of fish and crustaceans found there, as well as for its egrets and pink flamingos. Equipped with binoculars to observe the many birds that live around the pond, walk through the meadows on salicornes and walk or bike around the lake to enjoy its various absolutely magnificent views, especially at sunrise and sunset.
