Halfway between Arles, Nîmes and Montpellier, the town of Gallargues-le-Montueux lies in the heart of the Gard. Situated at the gateway to the Camargue, this charming destination enjoys an ideal geographical location to visit the most beautiful destinations in southern France. Between culture and nature, Gallargues-le-Montueux is a perfect holiday resort for holidaymakers in search of peace, beautiful landscapes and authenticity.
Perched at an altitude of 65 metres on its rocky foothills facing the plain of the Petite Camargue, where dry ponds and marshes stretch for 12 kilometres as far as the Mediterranean coast, Gallargues-le-Montueux is surrounded by nature. Renowned wine-growing land, it is watered by the Razil river and the Vidourle river, pleasantly lined with poplars and willows. But if Gallargues-le-Montueux is also famous in the department, it is also for its proximity with the neighbouring Camargue which transmitted to it many traditions, starting with its bandidos and its abrivados (releases of bulls in the streets of the city), as well as its arenas which welcome every year multiple races camarguaises. Occupied for thousands of years, Gallargues-le-Montueux preserves traces of past civilizations, as witnessed by the Pont Ambroix, also called the Pont Ambrussum embracing the banks of the Vidourle, this Roman bridge is one of the oldest vestiges of the commune. Made of stones, it originally had 11 arches, but only one of them is still standing today. On one of the works by the painter Gustave Courbet (Le Pont d'Albrussum) dating from 1857, a second arch was still visible at the time, before a flood definitively took it away at the beginning of the 20th century. A stopover town on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Gallargues-le-Montueux is home to an imposing medieval residence which was once the Saint-Jacques hospital : located at 1 rue de la Bonnette Rouge, it was built in the 14th century and is one of the oldest buildings in the commune. The Royal Tower is one of these monuments to visit : classified a historical monument, this watchtower perched at the top of the village is one of the remains of the ramparts that once surrounded the city. Used in the past as a relay for the telegraph, it is one of the symbols of the commune. The church of Saint-Martin and its frescoes, the Protestant Temple as well as Thomas Burnet's residence and its Italian villa airs are also to be added to the list of sites to visit during your visit to Gallargues-le-Montueux.
As for excursions, the surroundings of Gallargues-le-Montueux abound with magnificent places to discover absolutely, on foot for brave hikers, but also by bike, motorcycle or car. At 20 kilometres from the town, you will find the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes : almost 2 kilometres long, these medieval fortifications are famous for the magnificent panoramas they offer, especially from the Tower of Constance which embraces some of the most beautiful landscapes of the region. How to talk about Gallargues-le-Montueux without mentioning the nearby Camargue ? This vast wetland, a Mecca of Provençal culture, is rich in biodiversity, sumptuous flora and fauna and a wide variety of unique landscapes. From natural spaces to museums, walks or horse rides between land and sea will be at the heart of your excursions. We advise you to go to the pond of Vaccarès, located about fifty minutes from Gallargues-le-Montueux : you can walk, cycle or horse ride around it to capture some of the most beautiful landscapes of the Camargue. With family or friends, you can stop for a picnic and observe the many pink flamingos that have made their home in this magnificent nature reserve.
Lovers of idleness and swimming, don't forget to pack your bathing suit : Gallargues-le-Montueux is only 15 minutes from the seaside resort of La Grande-Motte and the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean. Thus, it will be easy for you to go in a few moments on the fine sand which borders the azure sea. On the agenda ? Fishing, diving, sailing, motor boat rental, rowing, kitesurfing, water skiing, jet-ski... The list of activities along the Mediterranean beaches is long, and one thing is certain : you won't know where to start !
