Between countryside and the Atlantic ocean in the West of France, Poitou Charentes has everything necessary to appeal to sightseeing enthusiasts, adventurers and people looking for a little bit of relaxation. Along the coastline the city of La Rochelle provides plenty of cultural activities and museums as well as one of the best aquariums in France. The beaches in the region have a really clean, soft sand with some of the best beaches found on the Ile de Ré and the Ile d'Oléron, both connected to the mainland by impressive bridges. The local seafood speciality here are oysters. Inland the countryside also has loads to discover. Cognac is home to many distilleries and cognac houses which nearly all provide excellent guided tours of their facilities. The surrounding area is full of vineyards that stretch into the distance. To the East of La Rochelle the Marais Poitevin, nicknamed "green Venice", are a series of canals and rivers which are great for boating kayaking cycling or walking. The region also boasts its historical capital, Poitiers. The Futuroscope theme park just to the North makes for a great day out for adults and children alike. With a warm climate and so much to do Poitou Charentes is an excellent holiday destination.
