Considered as the Saint-Tropez of the Atlantic coast, Saint-Martin de Ré, capital of the Ile de Ré, is an idyllic destination for holidays at the rhythm of the waves and sunny afternoons. Rich with an important historical and cultural heritage, this maritime village is an essential place to visit for anyone wishing to discover the most beautiful corners of the Ile de Ré.
Organised around its port, nestled behind its thick star-shaped fortified ramparts, Saint-Martin-de-Ré is a holiday resort adored by all its visitors. The city walls were built by Vauban to protect the city from English invasions following the siege of La Rochelle in the 17th century. Almost 14 kilometres long, these fortifications are among the most majestic built by Vauban.
Walking in the freshness of its beautiful stones lined with fragrant hollyhock roses, you will discover many treasures of the Retais heritage, such as the half-timbered house of the Vinaterie built in the sixteenth century, the Citadel which was once a place of passage for prisoners leaving for the convicts of French Guiana and New Caledonia, or the Gothic Hotel of Clerjotte, recognizable thanks to its superb Renaissance style. To the rhythm of its wells, squares and squares, take time for a coffee in the shade of a terrace to soak up the sweetness of life, so characteristic of the commune. The port of Saint-Martin is also worth a visit : lined with numerous restaurants and lively terraces at the end of the day, it is protected by a seawall and the city walls. It is the village's flagship element, home to some beautiful fishing and pleasure boats, and is the starting point for beautiful sea excursions to discover the island and the surrounding towns.
Saint-Martin de Ré, criss-crossed by a multitude of cycle paths, is a delight for lovers of beautiful bike rides, both inland and along its coastline. It will also be easy for you to discover the other towns on the island, which are also crossed by numerous cycle routes. Whether you are walking or cycling, you will have to go to the bell tower Observatory : ruin of a church of the XIVth century, this bell tower dominates Saint-Martin from the top of its 117 steps. From its summit, it offers to its curious visitors breathtaking panoramas on the fortifications, the island and the open sea : we advise you to go there with a camera, it is a real enchanting place especially when the sun rises or sets and the sky takes care of its coloured magic.
With your family, you will have to stop over at Parc de la Barbette: near the fortifications and facing the sea, this park offers many leisure activities for the youngest. The most popular activity ? The donkey ride ! Emblematic and traditional of local folklore, donkeys in panties used to help carry salt and wine, dressed in "panties" that protected them from cutting herbs and insect bites.
For refreshing parentheses, head for the only beach in the town : the "Plage de la Cible". Located to the east of Saint-Martin, not far from the Citadel, it is easily identifiable thanks to the many small white huts which dot its seaside. Spreading over more than 200 meters, it makes the happiness of the amateurs of water sports thanks to its sailing center. Thus, you will be able (in addition to swimming of course) to make catamaran, stand up paddle, wake board, windsurf, canoe, optimist, kitesurf, towed buoy or water skiing.
We advise you to take a sweet break at the "La Martinière" glacier, famous for its delicious original ice creams and perfumed for all tastes, as well as in the "Mille Sabords" shop : if you are a tintinophile, you can find small nuggets like posters, comics, figurines and original paintings around the universe of the famous journalist Tin-Tin. The restaurants of Saint-Martin-de-Ré are also a must during your visit, allowing you to discover the most delicious local specialities through their menus. On the menu ? Grilled knives, seafood platters, oyster tastings, grilled sardines sprinkled with salt from the Ile de Ré, potatoes and wines from local vineyards, which will surely delight your taste buds.
