On the edge of the Pays d'Auge, on the south shore of the Seine estuary, Honfleur is a small fishing port well known for its architecture and atypical charm. Loved by painters, history buffs and lovers of the sea, Honfleur is a city where it is good to settle down at any time of the year.
A true favourite destination, it will be hard for you to resist the charms of Honfleur. With its winding alleys, corbelled houses and original slate-decorated façades, the city is a model for regional architecture. During your stay, you will discover its small shops full of character, its many art galleries, its cafés and restaurants which, in addition to seducing your hearts, will certainly seduce your stomachs. Here, the gastronomy is generous and deliciously iodized: both a fishing port and a marina, Honfleur is undeniably turned towards the sea and its dishes are naturally affected. Sole Normande, scallops, mussels, shrimps, grilled orphies, but also pommeau, perry, cider, calvados, camembert, pavé d'Auge, livarot, pont-l'évêque, fondue normande, apple pies and other milk jams will amaze the taste buds of gourmands curious to taste the delights of the Norman terroir.
Well satisfied, discover the historic city of Honfleur: you will first find the imposing Sainte-Catherine church. Recognizable among all, Sainte-Catherine's Wooden Church is one of the most emblematic sites in Honfleur. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries after the departure of the English with wood from the Touques forest, it has the particularity of being totally separated from its bell tower, which is located just opposite its entrance door. It is one of the largest wooden churches in the whole of France. A thousand-year-old city decorated with the title of "City of Art and History", Honfleur will surprise you with the richness of its heritage: also, take the time to stroll along the quays of the Old Basin to immerse yourself in what makes Honfleur so charming. You will discover narrow and tall houses typical of local architecture, perfect postcard of Honfleur where onlookers and curious people like to come and go. At the end of the Old Basin, you cannot miss the Lieutenancy: a large stone building once home to the King's Lieutenant, it is now one of the remains of the entrance gates of the former fortified Honfleur.
What to see during your stay? The Musée de la Marine is certainly one of the highlights of your visit, as is the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel, or the Eugène Boudin Museum and its rich collections of painters such as Monet, Dufy or Courbet who, through history, have been passionate about the beauty of the place. The Satie House, the Naturospace and its butterfly collections, the Manoir de Roncheville, the many Honfleur gardens such as the "Jardin des Personnalités", the promenade de la Jetée, but also the 17th century salt granaries and the Pont de Normandie are not to be missed: the latter, eminently famous, links Upper and Lower Normandy. It is also one of the largest bridges in the world.
To complete your stay in Honfleur, how about a relaxing break on its beaches? The amazing beach of Vasouy is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in Calvados: located on the banks of the Seine estuary, it offers its visitors incomparable views of the commercial port of Le Havre and its huge cranes. In its extension, the beach of Le Butin and its charming bathing cabins is very popular with families. Located not far from the historic centre, you can practice a wide range of water sports, from sailing to paddle, sea kayaking, optimist and boat to, why not, sail towards the famous port of Le Havre nearby.
