It is in the heart of the Occitanie region, at the confluence of the Aure and Louron valleys, that the commune of Arreau is located. Bug of mountain with the beauty admirably preserved, Arreau is perched at 703 meters of altitude in the north of the massifs of the Hautes-Pyrénées, between the passes of Peyresourde and Aspin. Appreciated for its architecture as much as for its weather and its relaxing living environment, Arreau is an ideal holiday destination for nature lovers looking for quiet places to explore.
Land of Art and History, the valleys of Aure and Louron, of which Arreau is the historic capital, are a place of pilgrimage for many history and heritage lovers. A tour through the commune will allow you to discover the local treasures, from the Saint-Exupère chapel to the Maison des Lys (a 16th century Gothic house made of half-timbering and grey marble), without forgetting the Musée des Cagots and the Château des Nestes, an old military and hospital building which served as an astronomical observatory and which today houses the commune's tourist office. You will be surprised by the originality of the town hall of Arreau : built in 1932, this architectural complex made of ochre wood, half-timbering and blue halls is one of the most popular sites of the city.
Many sports activities are possible in Arreau and around the commune. You can climb, archery, raft, scooter and trek. Created in 1970, the Payolle artificial lake is the scene of many games and water sports for young and old. Perched at an altitude of 1135 metres at the foot of the Aspin pass, Payolle Lake covers nearly 11 hectares. Nestled in the hollow of one of the most beautiful fir forests in the Pyrenees, its wide spaces make it a privileged place for many activities in an absolutely magnificent natural setting : you can fish, go mountain biking, canoe-kayaking, pedal-boating, horse or pony rides through the Adour valley, tennis, or even walk along its marked trails to Lake Bareilles, only 11 kilometres away. In the heart of the fir forest are perched huts and tree climbing trails, an ideal activity for the whole family. In winter, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, paragliding and snowshoeing excursions will delight snow sports enthusiasts.
Only 30 minutes from Spain and 1 hour from Lourdes, Arreau offers a wide range of possible activities, both on French soil and once the Spanish border has passed. Around fifty kilometres from Arreau, take a tour around the Pic du Midi : perched at an altitude of 2877 metres, it is one of the most beautiful sites in the Pyrenees, not to be missed under any pretext if you are passing through the region. Accessible to all via the cable car, this magnificent place at the top of the Pyrenees will offer you panoramas among the most beautiful of the world on 300 kilometers of snow-covered mountain ranges. The place lends itself perfectly to stargazing, meditation, rest and unforgettable descents for freeride skiers in winter and mountain bikers in summer.
Finally, if there is one gastronomic speciality that you will have to taste when you come to Arreau, it is the spit cake. The people of Aurois are so proud of their pastry shop that they dedicate a festival to it once a year, in the month of July : the Gâteau à la Broche festival. During this celebration organized by the "Confrérie du Gâteau à la Broche" (yes yes !), you will be able to attend the making of this dessert and taste it accompanied by ice cream, honey, jam, sorbet or cream according to your tastes.
