In the Hérault department, in the heart of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, Saint-Jean-de-Védas has everything, oh yes everything, to please those who dream of a holiday in the sun. Just west of Montpellier, about fifteen kilometers from the beaches of Palavas-les-Flots, Saint-Jean-de-Védas is located on the hills of the Gardiole massif, and boasts a splendid natural heritage. Watered by the river Mosson to the south-west and crossed by the Rieucoulon which marks its border with Montpellier, this land of escape conquers every year new hikers and other sportsmen in search of preserved landscapes with stunning beauty. Our advice? Take the time to stroll along the banks of the Mosson to discover the Saint-Joseph mill built during the 18th century, but also to walk along the Gardiole mountain made up of more than 5,000 hectares of wet meadows, the Lauze scrubland, and the Mosson valley which includes superb forest areas perfect for hiking. For families, the Terral park adjoining the eponymous castle is ideal for a fun visit: in the heart of a large park of nearly 3 hectares planted with a fragrant pine forest, scent gardens and other arboretums are perfect for a bucolic break in a splendid setting. Property of the Bishops of Maguelone since the 9th century, the fortified castle of Terral became at the end of the 20th century a place of spectacle, exhibitions and magnificent demonstration which you will also be able to discover during your visit.
And there are many things to discover in Saint-Jean-de-Védas! A charming village, it has brilliantly preserved its charm of yesteryear, which can be seen in its architecture with its crazy cachet. A former agricultural village that prospered thanks to the wine industry, it is also famous for its stone. Only 3 quarries were located on the territory of the commune, from which were extracted splendid stones which were used for the construction of the aqueduct of Arceaux in Montpellier, as well as of many mansions in the commune; many were built around the Victor Hugo square, in the center of which a seigneurial castle once stood. A dynamic town, Saint-Jean-de-Védas organises numerous festivities throughout the year, such as the "fêtes votives", the "fêtes de la Saint-Jean", the carnival, gourmet markets, street theatre festivals, concerts... Something for the whole family.
Finally, it is impossible to stay in Saint-Jean-de-Védas without visiting Montpellier, which is worth a visit for its young atmosphere, its spectacular tags, its small gourmet restaurants and its omnipresent culture, or without a stopover on the nearby Mediterranean beaches. Located only 15 kilometers from Saint-Jean-de-Védas, the beaches of Palavas-les-Flots will be absolutely perfect for your farniente interludes. Sunbathing or sandcastle competitions, swimming in turquoise water, scuba diving, paddle, jet-skiing and other water sports activities for beginners and surfing aficionados will complete your stay in the south of France.
